So I'm "desperately" in "need" of Hydrangea paniculata 'Quickfire'. Does anybody have this and, if so, would you be starting cuttings this year that you'd like to share? Heidi, do you carry many Hydrangeas?
I'd like to beef up my hydrangeas this year. I have a couple of Nikko Blue that continue to give me offspring, so I'll have a couple to trade at the Green Elephant. It's an old standard that many people have, but is no fuss and is a good starter.
Last year, Pix gave me cuttings of Ayesha and Jogasaki (thanks, Pix). And this last weekend I splurged on an Angel Robe Hydrangea ‘Frau Kinue’.
Anybody else out there have a favorite, mophead or lacecap, that they’d like to recommend?
Hydrangeas Anyone?
Of course!! What's the one that you show there?
See you tomorrow at your place at 8:45ish?
I have five small (one year) starts of my lace-cap. Blue to pink/purple in my soil. It is beautiful all year long.
Willowwind, are you coming to the Green Elephant, do you think? Maybe we'll see eachother when we do the Vancouver area tour? What are you looking for? I don't have a lot, but maybe somethin' I can trade.
Yes I have quickfire and pinkt winky. They both are very cool. big 1 gallon pots for 14.00 bucks. They need to be potted up. I have quite afew hydrangeas and will be getting some more. Thanks Heidi
Oooooh. Heidi - I want both of those. I'll put them on my list for when I come out there. $14.00. Whew!! Can't beat that. Thanks!!
Great, They were both great last summer blooming and I have many others. I think they are such a great plant that blooms in the middle og summer. My only problem is that I don't have tons of water in the flower beds so sometimes they struggle. I just bought a few for my garden from joy creek. I'm sure they are little starts but they have a few cool kinds. Write it down because we all get excited and without a list we might forget. Last time pixy wanted berberis pow wow and we forgot. Gwen wrote three checks because she kept seeing things. Glad I could help. Heidi
I have a part shade yard (nothing in the back gets sun all day, but everything gets some sun) that sits, I think, on some kind of spring that drains into a wetland below. For that reason, my grass in the upper sections stays green all summer without any help from me. So I think that the hydrangeas will do great there if I keep them protected from the slugs LOL. I grow some pretty big beauties out here.
Last night I was looking at Pinky Winky, Amethyst, Shinonome, Fuji Waterfall, Venice, Claudie, Raven and Preziosa. I think those are all paniculata, but I like LaceCaps as well. Not so keen on Oakleaf Hydrangeas, but that's because I haven't really seen them at their best. My neighbor has planted dozens and she's having a heck of a time protecting them from the deer, even the ones right by the front door.
I think the deer just eat oak leafs not the big leafs. Pretty soon I should have my website updated then you can see what I have. I have claudie and preziosa and venice from above plus others.
Gettin' excited over here, Heidi. :-)
katie59, I won't be going to any of the places you all go. But I could send it to you. If you could dmail me your address. Free no money involved.
Willowwind - bless your heart. That is so sweet. But I'd love to send you something . . .
Let's d-mail and see if I can't figure something out.
HI K59, I looked today and some already have new growth on them. They root like weeds around here so I really don't want anything for them. My treat. Let me know if and when I can send it.
Sheesh! Why didn't you tell me you wanted hydrangeas when you were at my place??? I might even have a fuji waterfall I could give you! I definitely have Amethyst and might even have one that's already rooted. I have about 20 different varieties as it's one of my many addictions. I admit it. I love hydrangeas. In the veggie filter I have cuttings from last year that are probably rooted by now, plus I usually layer all of the ones I have if possible so I can make plants to trade. I'll take an inventory tomorrow and let you know what I have. I also have shinonome, but can't remember if I did a cutting or what. Got that one at Heronswood and it's a slow starter.
Kayte, is this the place you are looking for?

Whoo - Melissa. I know you have beautiful hydrangeas (and believe me I did see a lot there). I was actually protecting one of your layerings in the new herb bed by the house when we spread dirt. Gotta love that.
Of course, I'd take some hydrangeas - and I'll be more than happy to come down and offer another work session for it. Besides, I forgot to ask for a look in the greenhouse while I was there before. LOL
LOL. I didn't want to clean you out, just to see all the new life stuffed into the niches. It's such a beautiful greenhouse from the outside.
Pix - I know about hydrangeasplus, but I will look in some older Fine Gardening mags to find the ad. I thought it went by some gent's name, but maybe it's not even in Oregon!!! Oh my pea-brain....
Hydrangeas?? I love them! I had NO idea there were so many different varieties. I would still be considered a newbie to all this gardening stuff.
They have always been my favorite. I would love to know how to start cuttings. I did get one from a large bush last fall and stuck it in the ground. Some man told me to do that. We'll see. If anyone ever wants to send a little start my way, I would be ever so grateful!
I can get raspberry starts if anyone is interested.
I want to get back to B'Ham so bad just to get starts of all my plants. With gas prices, I'm sure I can pretty much just buy new plants..::(((
They did put in a couple hydrangea plants here, I'll see what kind they are. They are pretty small plants.
K~
Hi S -
There's a ton on the Internet about hydrangea propagation. Here's one link: http://www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/propagation.html. I'll bet they'll do fantastically in Tillamook.
Thanks! I hope so. I did pt one in a pot and brought it inside to see how it would do. I ended up putting the pot back out after the nasty cold weather. It seems to be doing fine. I have always loved them. My other favorite is Hosta. I rescue som many ove the past two years and have only 2 starts here with me. I would love to go get my Sum and Substance, he was huge!
Hostajim posts here from time to time. If you're up for it, we're planning a tour of his place (he hybridizes hostas) later in the spring. April, I think. It should be on the calendar of events (there's so much we all want to do!! - there's a thread for it.
I wouldn't think you'd have any problem with your hydrangeas once they're in the ground. They should overwinter fine. I have several Nikko Blue in my yard and they aren't phased by winters here.
Hydrangea cuttings are extremely easy for the most part. some varieties are more persnickety, but in general, just take cuttings at least 6 inches long in the early spring as the plant is leafing out. Get cuttings with no flower, or cut the flower off. That's now where you want the energy to go. That's when the growth is most active and when the 'every plant wants to live' theory is most generous. Remove the leaves from all but the top two growth points. Cut the bottom at an angle. Stick it down into a little seed starting mix that is moistened. When I root stuff in pots, I like to use seed starting mix, but I mix in a little perlite or vermiculite or pumice. Whatever I have on hand. Good drainage will keep the cutting from rotting. Make a miniature greenhouse by either cutting the bottom off a 2 liter bottle and slipping it over the pot, or by using a big ziploc bag upside down over the pot and securing it with a rubber band. Then put the pot on the windowsill out of direct sun, or outside in the shade. Make sure the pot doesn't dry out. Check for roots in a couple of months. If the pot needs to be watered, put a little hydrogen peroxide in the water to prevent rotting.
If the soil stays moist, no reason why sticking cuttings in the ground wouldn't work.
Thank You!!!
And yes, let me know of the tour. I'll have to take some time to check out the calendar. I did see it, maybe I could figure out that google calendar thing.
I had better be off to bed.
This is what I did before.... stayed up to late on DG. Not a bad place to be::))
Right now laying in bed with lap top and DH snoring soundly. Two cats by my feet and Mr. Bo in his own little toddler bed.....call me crazy...it's OK. I'm not even old is the sad thing!
Hey Somer, Welcome to DG
