?? Where to get passion vine in Houston area?

Sugar Land, TX

Anyone know where I can get a passion vine in the Houston area? If I have to mail order I will, but I prefer to buy local -- see and touch - when I can!

Thanks a bunch!

Jo, you need to come to one of the round-ups. Several people share passifloras.

Pbtxlady is right! Join us at the Central TX Roundup in College Station in April! I've gotten lots of passifloras and so many other awesome plants from fellow DG'rs at the Roundups. Don't worry about bringing trades - there are always more than enough. Check out the trade link as well. Feel free to join in. All Texans are a very friendly bunch, and the Central Texans have become my friends as well!

Yes, it's very cool! I've only made it to one so far, but it was such great fun to meet the folks I'd been chatting with. Everyone is welcome, and everyone eats way too much, and everyone has a great time. And then it's fun all over again when the pictures are all posted here the next few days. :)

As for plants, what a hoot. I barely got everything in my car coming home.

Those plants are special. Every time I look at one, I think of the person who brought it, and remember how much fun that day was. Hope you can join us in April.

Jo_ ~ I am not from your area and can't tell you where you will find one but I can truly appreciate your comment about "seeing and touching" one. I am a touchy, feely plant person. I can usually tell by touch if I will be successful with a plant or not. That, is the main reason I dislike thorns and spines on my green stuff. 8 ) I am sure someone will be along that will direct you on a plant shopping tour. pod

Not sure which one you may want but the native May Pop is very invasive here in east Texas. I have many young ones coming up. If you want this one just let me know and I will send it to you. You may want to plant it in a pot to keep in bounds. They are beautiful.

I LUV this board! You are all so friendly, but what else would I expect from a bunch of fellow Texans! haha

Even though I have nothing to share but weeds right now, I would love to go to the College Roundup, but I will be visiting my daughter in Vancouver, Canada, and heading out to BUTCHARTS GARDEN on Vancouver Island. hehe

It will be the very early part of their spring show, but the gardens are so lush, even if I don't see as many blooms, I know I'm going to be thrilled. In fact, the spring "bulb" season is my least favorite anyway.

Anyway, what would be the "least" invasive of the passifloras around here? With our growth season, I guess that's a rather futile question, anyway. LOL

I have lots of passis to share as well, but I also understand the need to see and feel the plants. That's why I love going nursery hopping! I don't usually come home with much, but I love seeing all the plants and combos and getting ideas. My least invasive passi right now is my native white one, but probably because it is younger. They all spread by underground runners, I usually dig up some of these for trades, and the mowers get the rest. The ones that I don't want in the garden I just pull out. My lady margaret passi is a pretty one and one that doesn't spread too much, it dies back in winter too. Incense dies back also for me but throws up lots of runners, as does maypop. Lady lavender throws up a few runners but overall is a great passi too.

Blue eyes-
I would like to grow some of the other varieties of passies. Not
sure what I might have to trade but grow lots of stuff. Give me an idea of things you might like since my trade list is worthless.
Really interested in the Lady Margeret.
What color is Incense ?
Let me know.

I actually don't have any starts of the lady margaret, I tried starting some cuttings in the greenhouse but they didn't make it. On the other hand, I have lots of lady lavender, a nice blue/purple with reflexed petals. May still have some incense in there too right now, it is purple and fragrant. I plant them for the butterflies. Should have more of everything this summer when the runners start popping up.

Thanks Blue eyes for your reply.
Would love to do a trade. Tell me what you like.

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

I am looking mainly for butterfly and hummer plants. I also like vines, ground covers, succulents, and anything fragrant. I stay away from poisonous plants as I have a dog and two kitties who like to dig up and chew things.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Bet I will have some vines, succulents, and ground covers. Will get alist of those that I have named.
I too grow for the hummers and butterflies but mainly the common plants.....cone flower, lantanas and salvias.....

Here's an article on passiflora - scroll through to the end to see a few more of the over 500 types. The listing for the international society is also there, and a picture of the variety Incense.

I have seeds of edulis and flavicarpa and am hoping they will sprout for me. They are said to be slow to appear. Both are fruit producers. I've tasted the juice and it is delicious.

Here are some blossoms from a previous season.

It looks like you've got lots of ideas of where to go; just in case you don't make it to the round up, and/or for future reference, there are a couple of neat nurseries in the Heights area- I've been to A Place in Time (I think that was the name) and Buchanan's. They've both had passion vines in the past. Also, look up March Mart at the Mercer Arboretum- that's coming up, and it's always a good resource! Good luck!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I've got to go to the March Mart one of these days! Glad for the reminder. Those are great garden shops that Sellier recommended. If you're out northwest there's the Arbor Gate - I go those 3 places a lot to look and touch and also buy...

Have you checked out the passiflora forum here on DG? I get so busy I don't often, but there's a thread about rooting Lady Margaret I need to read. I bought one of those last spring at Enchanted Forest in Richmond (or Rosenberg?) and would love to have more to trade and for the BF's when they return in the spring.

I got some great starts from Kim last fall, and will put them out soon. Sorry you can't join in the fun at the RU - but going to those gardens will be a great experience, I'm sure. It's on my list of garden places I need to see.

Sugar Land, TX

Hopefully, Enchanted Forest or Enchanted Garden will have one soon. I'm so impatient! :(

I bought mine in the heat of summer when the butterflies were heavy. Then it was gorgeous and big. They may not put them out until they can charge the $$ big bucks for them while their little winged advertising crew are fluttering all around, lol. I splurged and spent about $19.00 - it was big and in bloom. Right now it's dormant, so not very attractive at all. At least, I hope it's dormant and not dead!

And I am GREEN with envy ~ BUTCHARTS GARDEN on Vancouver Island. What a delight! I hope you enjoy it. I hope you will share your adventures and if you are able to take photos, I hope you will post them. At least I can travel there vicariously... pod

The roundup sounds great...

If you want a really neat nursery somewhat near you, perhaps a bit of a drive, check out Caldwell:
http://www.caldwellhort.com/

I think they have a few passion vines now with plenty more to come in spring, they always have amazing variety. If nothing else, it is worth it just to walk around the grounds and see the rare bamboo.

There are are a few in Houston, Joshua's Native Plants, Another Place in Time, Buchanan's Native Plants are my favorites, you will find plenty of passion vine variety soon at each of those.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Check out the Ft. Bend County Master Gardener sale in March. There will be some for sure! And both Enchanted's. I also found one at Another Place in Time last year.

Caldwell's is not much further than the Enchanted nurseries and it's always great for a visit.
