New Butterfly Exhibit Open in Wash, DC!!

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7b)

For those who live in the D.C. Metro area or are planning to visit this year, this is to announce that the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History has just opened a new butterfly exhibit!! It is called"Partners in Evolution" and consists of two exhibits. The evolution exhibit is free, and is right next to the live butterfly pavilion which features hundreds of live butterflies and tropical plants from around the world. Entrance to the butterfly pavilion requires purchase of advance tickets which are for time slots. I believe the exhibit will be open for most of the year, as the website did not say how long it will be there.

You may find out more about it by going to:

Also, for those who love to watch insects in general, the O. Orkin Insect Zoo has re-opened!! They feature live tarantula feedings and touch and feel sessions with live bugs. Also in the same museum!!

Thanks Foxnfirely,
There is a chance we can visit the area during the Cherries Fest. Perhaps we can swing by and enjoy butterfly exhibit.

Good to know about this butterfly exhibit at the Smithsonian! Sounds fascinating.

I visited DC in mid January and went to the National Botanical Gardens on the Mall--they planted a butterfly garden in the new landscaped area (although nothing was in bloom when I was there) which might be fun to visit in summertime, too.

And I visited the National Geographic Explorers Hall and saw their very interesting Frog Exhibit http://www.ngeo.com/museum/exhibitions/chorusofcolors.html If you are visiting with children it is a fun way to spend an hour or so too (within walking distance of the Mall).

Hey, Tabasco!! That's great to hear about the frog exhibit!! I have been to the National Geographic Society hall before but it was a while back. A friend of mine worked there and I saw the planetarium.

Next time you come to D.C., let me know!! I'll try to meet you. I work down the street from the NBG!! I used to visit on my lunch hours but now I have no lunch hours!! Too busy. But I would try to get out to meet you if you have time on the next trip.

Well, that sounds great! I go to DC every so often. I have 2 sisters who live in the area (Alexandria and MD) and my DH does a lot of work at the Capitol Bldg. We stay at the Madison Hotel--is that close at all to where you are?

I stop at the National Geographic Society quite often. It's free and they always have something interesting on show. And this time I needed to stop in to get warmed up!!

Hmm, I am not sure where the Madison is but will find the address. I'm closest to the Washington Monument and at 14th and Independence Avenue, SW. Sounds like your DH does important work on the HIll!!

Yes, it's been blubbering cold here!! We had an ice storm this past week. It's been a really "good" classic winter!!! Spring should be spectacular!! The cherry blossoms are coming in about another 4 weeks!
