My pod

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Ok, I'm wanting to know if it's time to "harvest" my brug pod. It's shriveling up, turning brownish, and when I felt of it yesterday it was kinda sticky on the outside. I'm afraid it will rot if I leave it any longer, however, I am NOT the expert on pods, since this is my first one. And, if I do pick it, do I open it right away and spread the seeds (if there are any) to dry, or what? I need to know the proper procedure. :>)

TIA........

What color is the stem on the pod? It will turn yellow and dry out when the pod is ready. You can make a clean cut on the pod and see if the cork surrounding the seeds is a dark brown, an indication that the seeds are ripe. If the cork is a light color, close the cut and tape it shut, but if the pod is sticky, it may indicate a developing problem. Do you have any idea how long the pod has been growing?

When you cut the pod off, open it, remove the seed and spread them out on a layer or two of paper toweles to dry for a few days.

I like to peel the cork off the seeds. However, I wait until the cork, as well as the seed coat, is dry. It is very easy to plunge a fingernail into the seed itself and kill it. That way I know if there is a seed there in the first place. I have harvested seed pods that contained mostly empty cork capsules.

the pod was ripe. I cut into it and the cork was dark brown. I have 130 seeds. Is this good for a first "pregnancy"???? (this is my first pod.........LOL)

Congrats Anna _Z ...and now the fun begins :) cluck cluck cluck

Anna,
Congratulations. Brug babies are so exciting.
Do you know the name of the brug mama?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Anna; this season I collected various sizes of seedpods. Starting from the smallest pod of about 85 seeds to the largest pod of 285 seeds. Congratulations!

MyRee............well, the mama was named, but the tag blew away. It was a seed that came from one of Monika's brugs. It is a gorgeous deep pink. Huge blooms. I might have a photo somewhere lodged in the innards of my computer...........I'll look.
