Tyler area gardeners

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

The CCMG- Cherokee Co. Master Gardeners had a neat treat at our last meeting in Jacksonville. Dave of Dave's Garden was our guest speaker. He is a great speaker and very knowledgable. I wish I had known early enough to invite you guys to the meeting.
We are small but growing. We will have a plant sale on Saturday April 26. There will be a variety of member grown plants for sale. Come see us and get some goodies. We will also have our anual Garden Tour coming up. This is a neat day with several folks showing off their gardens.
I was asked about a compost facility located just west of Jacksonville on Hwy 79 towards Palestine. It is great stuff particularly for starting new beds or amending old ones. Here is a link to them. www.soiltherapy.org They sell by the bag or pickup load. Sorry it has taken me so long to get this information to you.
Spring is coming soon.

Thank you for the information DD.
Josephine.

Hey DD thanks for the info
I'll have to try and remember April so I can come see what y'all got.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Forgot to say that the compost bags will be for sale at the Plant sale in April. One of the guys that runs this place is in the CCMG.

Mibus2- This is the stuff I told you about a while back but did not have the name and directions to the place. It is great for what you are starting to do at your place. The Texas Hwy. Dept uses this stuff. A demonstration was done a few years back with wild flowers. The areas that had the compost were remarkablly different in comparison.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

got the site bookmarked so I can go through it and show DH so hopefully we can get some to put in the garden area and flower beds. thanks!

Dde, I would love to go to the plant sale. Where and what time is it?

Mibus, sorry I missed you yet again! My family has been passing the flu and cold crud back and forth for the last two weeks. Taking this weekend off just to sleep, rehydrate and post here and there.lol

Cocoa
The sale will be April 26 usually begining at around 8:30-9:00. It will be on Hwy 69 near the ETMC hospital, Jacksonville. We will sell only member grown plants. We will have a group pot-up day soon (2/26)so that the plants will have time to really get rooted in prior to the sell. I will have a better idea of things we will have to sell as well as better information as the time get closer. Think you will enjoy the group and get some interesting plants. Look forward to meeting and seeing you.

Tyler, TX

I hope you will post on this thread as it gets close to the sale. My neighbor and I went to the Men's Gardening Club sale here in Tyler last spring and had a great time buying plants.

Thank you,DD. I look forward to the sale! While in the area I hope to visit some of the other Garden centers you've spoke of too.

Shirley, I missed last years Men's sale. Do you know if it's the same date and will it be at the TRG again?

Tyler, TX

I don't know the date but I keep watch in the news paper for it and I'll be sure and make a post.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

I have gone to the Tyler Men's garden sale for several years now. It is great. I think they have a web page but have not looked up the date for this years yet.

Cocoa- I would love to take you over to all the neat GH in New Summerfield but will be tied up on this day. Maybe a group of area DG's will want to plan a day for that. Let me know. If there are very many interested we could meet at Love's Lookout and car pool.
DD

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Cocoa let me know if you are going and maybe we could go together.
I don't work Saturdays anymore.

Tyler, TX

Count me in too! I went to the Mens Garden Club website and it hasn't been updated for 2008. The sale last year was on April 28 so it should be about the same as then. I hope they're not on the same day, the one in Tyler was just from 9-2 or something like that.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Shirley were is it held?
I'm still learning my way around Tyler but would love to check it out.

Tyler, TX

It's out by the rose garden but over in the area where they have the fair.
It wasn't very big, just under a pavilion but the prices were so good.

Sounds good to me! We can all figure out where to meet closer to the date of the sale!

Mibus, are you going to Melva's next weekend? Do you want to ride with me?

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

If Tyler and Jacksonville MG sales are on the same day them make both of them.
Last year the CCMG had some real nice things...
Oak leaf hydrangea
Mex. Bird of Paradise
Hardy and tropical hibiscus
Daylily-several colors and names
Plus lots more but not sure what they will have this year.
DD

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Oh well I know where that is DH and I went to the fair to check it out for our first year here.

mmm hydrangeas I have been thinking of putting some along the fence in front of the house
and the others sound great too am gonna have to make sure I make it.

Cocoa we have an appt. on our taxes at 11am and I think it would make it rather late to go then :((
Would love to say yes as I could use a day of play.

Taxes are no fun, don't worry we'll make up for it later.

DD, that list has me sooo looking forward to Spring, it won't be long now! If anyone in your group has wood ferns that need dividing, I can guarantee them a buyer :o)

East of Nacogdoches, TX(Zone 8a)

Well for pity's sake, DD. I just realized Dd Tex is actually you, I thought you just lurked! Should have known better. Have read your other postings, but didn't connect the online name with the real person.

Folks, DD is a world class gardener (but regular readers probably know that) and a one time neighbor. You can trust his advice!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Rose, good to hear from you. You will have to come see me prior to the sale day and get some of my goodies. Still have some brugmansias for you.
When is the big SFA sale this year ? That is another good one that folks need to know about and go see.
That's Galveston (Inside joke ! )
DD

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

I think that we should ban the "TAX" word on this thread. It takes all your plant money.

Cocoa- I think someone had a few of the wood fern last year. I have several type of native ferns growing on my property-6.5 acres. Bet we could get you a start of several of them.
Mibus- the Oak leaf hydrangea needs a good bit of shade here in Texas, but they grow into real nice plants.
DD

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

The area I was thinking is along the fence between the yard and the road.....it has several large pines and a couple of tall Oaks spaced out so I was thinking in between those would be nice to make more of a privacy thing instead of just this woven wire fence.
They would get some early morning sun ... across the road it is all tall pines so not much late afternon sun I am thinking once things leaf out it would be alot of shade.

Sounds wonderful, DD, thank you. We took out a large oak last year, before the shade was so dense nothing would grow...now I have perfect area for a shade garden.

Mibus, just remember hydrangeas are a serious act of love here in Texas. Make sure your water hose is close to the planting area, you may need to water at least twice a day during the Summer. I love them but it does cross my mind to pull them all out each Summer. I hear the oak leafs are a bit easier, but the ones I planted got destroyed by grass hoppers within a week and I haven't had the guts to try them again...maybe this year.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

I figure one or two to try wouldn't be too bad if they are a loss....but have to try LOL

Sorry, don't mean to sound negative...you can do it! Just didn't want you to be surprised at the amount of water they use.I've been thinking of adding an organic water crystal to the base of mine to see if it would help, or maybe a dedicated rain barrel. I'm not ready to give them up either.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

My experience taught me that the Oak leaf requires less water than others. They do need good drainage. My huge mother plant (6' X5') died last year from the continued rain. I could not get it to dry out no matter my efforts, which were many. Others made it fine with a good watering once a week after the rains ended. They are sometimes hard to get started and slow growers at first. Some morning sun but shade in the hot afternoon is slmost a must.
I have 6-8 nice size ones potted up since last year that I will take to the sale.
DD

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

oh no negative meaning taken ...this is my trial and error year ya know LOL...I will try and see what I can grow here and what I can't then build from there.

making note to put the date on calendar (and set some cash aside) for the sale so I can try and grab up those potted up ones LOL
