Any type of tips to ecourage 'Epi's' to form flower buds?

Larsen, WI(Zone 5a)

After I bought my Epiphyllum in Florida, I believe the seller told me that using Bloom Booster fertilizer to encourage the bloom stage of my older 'Epi' plants. Is this true or false?

Please inform me....

Is there anyone who can answer this question for me? Its either a yes or no answer whether I should do or not try this type of procedure!

Thanks much....

Hi Barry. I'm no expert by any means. I have several epi's which have not bloomed either. I've been pulverizing banana peels and adding them to my soil mix - be sure to read our recent banana peel thread.

Here is a really good link recommended by this forum recently where it is recommended to use 1/4 strength Bloom Booster - plus a lot of good Epi info:

Here is another excellent resource by a noted Epi expert:

Hope this helps, Cindy

Barry, I don't get to this forum very often, but I happened to see your thread today. I just bumped up a thread recently which had all sorts of good fertilizing tips from Happenstance. You might look for that when you have some time. She talks about what she uses including regular ferilizer and fish emulsion.

What you have there is an Epiphyllum oxypetalum. Mine bloom fairly regularly at least twice a year -- once in July and once in September usually. I do feed with MiracleGro a couple of times in the summertime. They just need time and a little maturity to bloom well. Yours is going to need a much bigger container;-) I think mine started blooming about two years after I rooted the first cutting. Yours looks a little small for blooming and probably needs about another year of growth first.

And, by the way, the answer is no -- don't use a Bloombooster. Bloomboosters are really meant for in-ground plants and not container plants. The middle number, Phosphorus, can build up in container soils over a long period of time and not leach and cause problems.
