New to Davesgarden & question re elaeagnus

Sugar Land, TX

I understand there are several varieties of this plant.

I've purchased one - marked elaeagnus, that is very interesting, but I don't know exactly what variety it is.

It has dark green, slightly rounded, but oval leaves. They are somewhat glossy, and have silver undersides. The plant is about four feet tall and bushy, with limbs drooping, and has a few reddish fruit on it. NO thorns. I could be mistaken, but if this plant was going to have thorns, I imagine I would already see (and feel) a few!

Does anyone have an idea of "which" elaeagnus I purchased? I really like it, but would like to know more about it so I can determine exactly where I want to plant it.

Thanks so much. I'm so glad I found this place.

Jo - Welcome to Dave's Garden!

Are you able to take and post a picture of the plant in question?

Hi Jo, welcome to the Texas forum. The plant you have may be this one:

The one with thorns is probably E. pungens.

Thanks so much , fly_girl. I see you aren't too far from me. I'm in Sugar Land. Yes, that looks like the plant, and the growth habits are what the nursery owner told me. I understand it's not as aggressive as some of the other elaeagnus, and the plant is already being "trained" to become a small tree. I love the way the branches droop over - definitely something different for my backyard.

Thanks, again!
