Thistle or Nyger

I have two thistle socks that draw a big crowd of Goldfinches (9 this morning). I have heard somewhere that thistle seeds are sterile and if they fall to the ground they won't germinate. Is this true?

Chuck, Regular thistle seed from the ones that grow in your yard or out in the country will reseed but the Niger thistle seed that you buy in the stores will not. Our nieghbor lets the wild ones grow and go to seed in his yard and I have to roundup them every year in mine. I have used the Niger seed for years and they are sterile. Hope this helps. BEV
