Blooming Brug in FEB???/

Waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Hi everyone. This is my first winter with my brugs over wintering in side. (Course it is my very first brug too).

The darn thing is flowering I mean one is fully open, another is beginning and there is another bud. Is this common????? Sure is making my day but I thought they were late summer bloomers.

Any advice for these would be greatly appreciated. I have three a yellow, a white, and a pink. The white and pink never bloomed for me but the yellow did and now it seems to be blooming for me again.

I'm not real knowledge -able about these plants except they are not hardy in my zone.

Thanx ahead for anything anyone can tell me.

Cherie

Congratulations on your bloom! It is not unusual for them to bloom indoors in winter. You don'y mention how old your non-blooming Brugs are. It could be that they have not formed a "Y" yet. When cuttings are taken from above the mother plant's "Y", you can have big blooms on very small plants. If the cuttings were taken from below the mother plant's "Y", your plant will have to produce its own before it blooms. This may be the case with you non-bloomers. If you get bitten by Brug mania (It's very contagious. Once bitten, there is no cure!), you may want to invest in Brugmansia and Datura: Angel's Trumpets and Thorn Apples (Paperback) by Ulrike Preissel (Author), Hans-Georg Preissel (Author) or Engelstrompeten by Monika Gottschalk. Both are excellent books. When you have some free time, scan the old threads for great information.

Thanks bettydee. The other two do have small y's at top of the stem and one has another stalk coming up from below soil level. Do I leave that or should I cut it back?

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Leave it especially if you wish to try growing a standard. Growth from below ground grow up straight and tall. When it reaches desired height or when it has "Y"ed, you can cut it at ground level and root it. Even if you don't wish to grow a standard, leaving it will help develop a stronger plant and root system.

We will give you no more information until we see pictures. We need PICTURES.

I can't get a decent picture where you can see the blooms. No matter what time of day/night the light is so bright from the window behind it . I'll have to move it around to the middle of the floor to get one. This adds a couple of "but firsts" to the mix. First I have to move the fish container, then I have to move this plant out of the way then this plant out of the way. I will work on that today. okay?

May I fill in for the picture of some blooms? V.A. brug's initial mini-flush.

I had to reduce my number of brugs, health and space reasons. But I did take a few cuttings last fall . The pink ones, forget the name right now, have been blooming for a week or so. Have to turn off my HID light as makes everything yellow, to take photos.

Ah mine don't look so good now.

I wanted a greenhouse and hubby said no so instead of a 3,000$ greenhouse I got a 30K three-season room. I put the plants out there. Nice out there with the sun shining but the minute it gets dark the temps plunge and I have two base heaters and fans at night running. None of my plants bit the dust. The cannas I left in the pots and just cut back and they started growing again last month. My EE's the same thing. When I brought the brugs in they lost all their leaves. I had read an article that said that could be expected. They got more leaves and now the yellow one is blooming. I must be doing something right. I went to take a picture but alas my batteries ALL 3 sets!!!! Teenagers!

I'll keep trying to get a picture for you ,but realize mine don't look as good as the pics I've seen today. Boo hoo:(

Cherie, those are a fabulous colour - you lucky duck!

Donna, I'm amazed at the flowers you're getting on such small plants. You must be doing all the right things? Tell me.... what are the right things again? ;-)

I am certainly not an expert but here is what i do. I take cuttings from brugs growing outside about end of Sept. I take cuttings from branches above the Y so hopefully they will bloom before too late in late spring or early summer. When they out grow their 4" pots I pot on to 6 ". they are growing in the dark corner of the gh below my ( I think) 450 watt HID light fixture, which is a yellow bright light, which is why I have to turn it off to take photos. I do use 1/4 strenghth (diluted) Peters 20-20-20. A friend gave me 10 lb. box of tubes of Peters last year for my birthday.Hope that helps.

Thanks Donna. Tubes, hu? I don't think I've seen those.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I think tubes are the long skinny bags that the fertilizer comes in when you buy the big boxes.
You will be very familiar with them soon with all the babiez you have Teresa! LOL

Let's not talk about it ZZ! They're starting to come out of my ears. Pretty picture, isn't it? :-(

Brugs growing out of my ears..... I really need to work on this.
