Dormant Maple and Unknown Mame

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Haven't really had time to Bonsai much lol.
Here's my 6 year old maple dormant.
The other is an unknown plant from the woods I have trimed into mame.
They both need to be shaped but havent had the time.
Planning on making proper pots as well.

1 gallon Bleach bottle to show size.

Your unknown mame might be commpn privet. It is an escaped plant that has naturalised throughout the south. They actually make an interesting bonsai, setting clusters of dark drupes, and attaining a very nice size. They back bud like mad and can develop amazing trunk girth. I have seen some brought in from a grazing pasture where the cows constantly nipped off new growth. The stems had diameters approaching 4 inches and the actual height was around 6 inches.

Thats what it is. There's lots of privet on the property. Hillis just keeps mowing thejm down lol. I found this one in the yard. I used to go behind him checking chopped plants for bonsai lol.

We've cleared out a small lot with wild growing chinese previt (is that the same?), anyhow, I happen to have saved a couple seedlings to train them (Mother and child style) bonsai. I'm delighted that you've shared your interest in these.

Cool.
Bonsai is alot of fun. Before I moved back to tennessee it's what I did for a living. Ginger_H was doing it too.

There are other varieties of previt. But the wild Chinese previt has smaller leaves, so I thought it would be fun to work with. And their white cluster of flowers are intoxicatingly fragrant.

Here it's with Mountain Ash (not sure which Americana?), and Flowering Westeria senesis that I'm training.

Bonsai are like potato chips. You can't stop with one.

I know, I've designed a deck with built in Bonsai shelves, lol.
Poor Hillis won't be able to rest until he's an old old man!
