I bought some Dahlias from Sam's. I know what it says on the box, I need to know from someone with experience. I'm betting that they won't do in our sun. So how much sun to shade do you think that it would take?
Also, I have a park like light in my yard that stands right out in the sun and I'd like to put a vine of some sort on it. Preferably a flowering one but will consider something green. There is no shade for this thing and it is on the west side. So any suggestions on a vine that can take Central Texas sun?

Dahlias in Tex
Don't know about the dahlias but I'd like to learn. As for a vine, I can recommend passionvine. Some of mine are still green even now. And they love the sun. Also attracts the gulf fritillary butterflies, an added plus!
Have you got it in full sun? Because there will be no shade at this location.
me
Yep...full south/west sun. It loves it there. I'll be bringing some to the CS swap if you want some. The white and the caerulea have been green all winter, and the lavender lady held out for quite a while. I think the drought did it in more than the cold. The incense and incarnata die back in the winter but pop up again in April/May.
Anne, I tried to grow dahlias once many years ago. All I can tell you is that full sun didn't work.
Yes Blue Eyes anything that lasts would be wonderful. It only has to get to about 6' so long as it's a climber. I have some chicken wire around the bottom of it so that whatever is there has something to catch ahold of but it needs to be able to make it the rest of the way on its own.
I don't doubt it PBTX so few things do in our state. I'm going to put it in a pretty much shady spot. It will get some sun and and some dapple sun but that's all. I have some agapanthus that I'm going to put in the same location. I need to send pics I guess. I have some almond verbena and crocosmia in that bed so hoping for some other tall things to match in.

If you don't want it to get that big then I suggest one that dies back in winter. My other two are taking over my fence..lol.
Really, ok, when do they bloom?
AuntAnne,
I can't remember if it was you...that was looking for watering solution so that you can plant some more of your land...I saw this..it looks very interesting and economical...if it's not you..sorry..disregard..

My passis bloom all summer!
Surprised no one said MG's. Love sun and heat, bloom all summer well into the fall.
As far as Dahlias I got a few for a buck a piece and gave them a try. I got hot and they croaked. Not even in full sun, shade after about 2 pm.
somebody told me also, that our wind is not good for dahlias.........that's assuming you can get them to grow. it was suggested to me that the smaller flowering ones would do better here. i had some early spring planted ones to come up the year of the drought. they were stunted and didn't come back.
Yeah, mine were all stunted too. I didn't know that about the wind. I guess mine got blasted from the gale force that blows up my street.
Yes Randy it was me, but how would this help me water my flower beds? It looks great for lawns but can't see it's use for beds.
Also, oh yes I had MG's on there last year and will again this year. Thinking salvias, apple mint, and/or irises.

Your suppose to bury it in the flower beds..then you take a hose hook it up..and it waters everything..I didn't think you had beds built yet in that area
about 4-5 yrs. ago on the edge of a shady place in dallas i saw the most beautiful dahlias. there were only about 3 of them and they were a short variety. the flowers were prob. 6-8 in. and appeared to only have one per stem. it would be well worth it to try and find a spot for them as the flowers were just so striking.
