I have the goldfish plants and just got this lipstick. These plants are all related, right?
Lipstick, a violet cousin?
One of my favorite plants! Yes, they are all in the Gesneriad family. You will really like that one. ENJOY!
Lacewing
Thanks. It is so pretty. I just saw this on the forum..Pearcea hypocyrtiflora. Where can I find one to buy? I love the little flowers and leaves.
Yes, the Aecschynanthus (Lipstick Plant): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53438/ is a member of the Gesneriad family with African Violets. I have a couple of these and love them. I see your plant has buds/tubes beginning - they are so neat when the lipstick bloom comes out of the tubes!
I just had to go look up the Pearcea: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/143452/ ... neat looking plant! I've never seen it for sale anywhere around here but would love to try one! I couldn't find any on line source of this plant either!
That looks like Aecschynanthus Mona Lisa :)
Very pretty!
That looks like
Aecschynanthus Black Pagoda Jill
whoops, just realized I hadn't added the flower photo...
We spotted that on Sunday, but I didn't get it because I wasn't sure what it was (sale plant, no tag). Then, the more I thought about it, the more it seemed to me it was probably a gessie of some kind... and regardless of its ID, I was really wishing I'd brought it home. My wonderful DH went back today at lunch time and picked it up for me as a Valentine's gift... he tried to ask what it was, but their "expert" wasn't helpful, just said "oh, that's a Zebra plant!" LOL
So... Aecschynanthus Black Pagoda?
Wait! I found this: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/77824/
I think that might be the correct ID because of the flower color... maybe I just have a form with a more burgundy reverse to the leaf.
?
Critter, do you have a photo of the foliage? Does it look like this? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53424/
Lin, scroll up a couple of posts... If you need a closer look at the foliage, I can take another photo...
Thanks!
Oh, I hadn't seen that one and after seeing those photo's I'm wondering which plants I have. Both of mine were blooming about a month ago but the flowers were very nondescript, kinda pale yellow/greenish in color ... nothing spectacular. Both of mine are exotic angel plants and both were labeled black pagoda.
Oooh ... I love the looks of that foliage with all that red! I wonder if mine would get redder in color if it got brighter light? That is really a gorgeous plant ... looks totally different than my black pagoda's. I will go and see if I can take a couple of pic's of mine with some close up's of the foliage.
Oh Lin, I'm sure yours is just as pretty as mine *lol* but you have to be closeup with a camera to see them like they look on the screen. From a distance my flowers are ugly too *lol* Everything looks much different with a zoom lens *lol*
Oh, your Mona Lisa is so pretty too! Mine has a couple of buds but I really need to get out back and rinse everything down with the hose! There's so much yellow pollen everywhere - the deck, furniture and all of the plants are covered! Poor babies can't breathe very well with all that clogging their pores!
Here's my Mona Lisa:
Wow Lin, that is beautiful!
Notice I never take an "overall" shot *lol* Just closeups as the overall look of mine........well........not so nice *lol*
VERY pretty.
Jill, can't wait to see yours when those buds open too :)
Well, according to PF, 'Black Pagoda' should have orange blooms... There's a note in PF that says it's a hybrid of A. longicaulis and A. speciosus.
A. longicaulis has the greenish blooms that Lin & Kim have in their plants with the "Black Pagoda" labels, with very similar foliage... so I'm wondering if maybe their plants have sported or were possibly mislabeled.
The foliage on mine is similar to the photos of either 'Black Pagoda' or A. longicaulis, but the reverse has more burgundy. I love it!
Probably mislabeled as a lot of the Exotic Angel plants tend to be! Both of my plants seem to have some leaves with a real deep vivid burgundy and some not so much.
Mine is looking a little leggy/scraggly... which is probably how it ended up on the half-price sale. But it's a healthy looking plant, it's just that I'd like the leaves to be spaced a little more closely on the vines. Probably it wasn't getting quite enough light at the nursery. Should I prune it back hard, do you think?
Yeah, I know I need to get another photo so you can help me evaluate it... :-)
When you do prune it, root those cuttings! I have some rooting in water and some I potted up!
Ooh, rooting in water... one of my favorite (easy!) things... Thanks for the tip!
Oh yeah ... I love rooting in water too. Last year we had a Rooting Jar exchange, lots of fun. I have lots of stuff rooting and growing in water! I've got some Pothos and Dracaena (Lucky Bamboo) that has been in water for years! My kitchen windowsill has a few containers of water with stuff rooting and I have jars on a shelf with cuttings and also some cuttings in jars/vases of water out on my porch. I must admit though, I sometimes will be out on the deck repotting, take a cutting of something, stick it in a jar of water and forget about it - months later I find a dry container with dead stems! LOL.
I missed out on this thread. Critter, your lipstick doesn't look like my Black Pagoda at all????? Whatever it is, the foliage is beautiful.
Kim and Lin...........love to look at these plants..........the one Sally posted I have grown from a baby and am selling in the av show...........
I don't think mine is a Black Pagoda. I think it's more likely to be A. longicaulis... does that seem right to you? I hope so, because I need to ID it. I was pretty certain of the match from looking at the descriptions and photos in PF. If you folks think there's any doubt, I'll ask over on the ID forum (or Dmail Keyring).
:-)
Critter, just to be sure, I would dmail Keyring or Begonicrazii. I think you are right though in thinking that it is longicaulis.......
Try A. marmoratus In my experience the leaves are longer on one of these than the other The shorter leaved one reminds me of the Nematanthus- maybe a cross with Aesch.?
LOL. I just searched and found A. marmoratus: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/77824/ The one Critter linked to in a post a few days ago.
syn. marmoratus
syn. zebrinus
All so confusing to me at times!
Thanks!
I put its picture at the end of an article I just submitted... The ID comes up when you "mouse over" the image... I'm sure somebody will let me know if I got it wrong! :-)
