Lot's of Ruby Throated

Carlsbad, CA

I live in Carlsbad CA just North of San Diego. I have a total of 5 - 64 oz perching feeders. (I like to give the birds a rest while they're feeding.) The most action is just before dark when the birds are filling up their tanks for the long night ahead. There may be 50 birds looking for a spot at times. I go thru 25 lbs of sugar a month.
Put up the feeders & they will come! Just remember to keep them filled with fresh sugar water. The water will spoil if the feeders are in the sun all day & you're not cleaning them weekly.
Cleaning: I put a tablespoon of bleach in the feeder bowl, fill with hot tap water & let it sit about 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. I use hummingbird feeder brushes to clean the port holes.
Mix: I put 2 cups of sugar in an 8 cup pyrex measuring cup & fill with hot water (from the tap) to the 8 cup line & stir briskly with a wisk. You don't need to use any special mixes and heating the water to boiling is NOT necessary. Just make sure you stir till the sugar is dissolved & DON'T get creative & add anything else to the mix. Honey or syrups will prevent them from using their tongues.

That's sooooo cool! What kind of hummers are they?

That is my goal to attract a lot of hummers ... Becky's Hummer Cafe here on the east coast of Florida! The vacation spot for all winter migrating hummers! :-)

Wonderful! And welcome to DG!

You will have to tell us your secrets! Do you have a hummingbird habitat near you? Or a secret recipe nectar? (-:

Keep the pictures coming! We're lonely for our HBs here! t.

WOW that is amazing! I guess all of ours are territorial because they do NOT share!!!

Vicksburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Mine are like yours, mistygardener--they DON'T share! I have dozens show up at my feeders and they constantly fight with each other over perching rights on the feeders. My granddaughter is too funny--she sits out on the porch with me to watch them and tries to count them! She'll eventually learn to just sit and enjoy them--she's only eight. BTW, I call my feeder area the "hummerport." It can get quite noisy with that many of those little guys buzzing around at one time.

Hummerport, I love that! We set out on the steps and have them buzzing around our heads and some get so close we have to duck!

It's really neat to sit out there with a bright shirt, especially red or orange, and have one hover right in front of you trying to determine if you're an oversized flower!

Delightful pic acrisman!!!
Beautiful Black-chinned Hummingbirds! Do you get any other species there in Carlsbad?
