Elephant Ears?

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I have 4 elephant ears in a kind of long bed. They are with azaleas, and stuff like tht. I thought they'd get about 4 ft high, no they got 10 feet high. Now they look awful there.
Would they look good all together at the end of a flower bed, together up close to the porch in a corner.
I don't want to just get rid of them, I do like them, just not there

I like the corner of the porch idea. Then if you wanted you could plant something shorter in front of them to create a focal point.

That's kind of what I thought. I have some azealas there now, but can move them, or just put them in front of the elephant ears. Thanks for confirming!!

Wow, elephant ears 10 feet high? What kind are they?

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I have no idea. My son in law just brought some bulbs in one day. I think he probably just got them at wally-world. I don't know why I didn't take a picture. I just thought they were really in a place they liked, so they grew. .
My daughter has some and hers were the right size.
People kept stopping and saying "That's the biggest elephant ears I ever saw"
One guy stopped and asked if he could take a picture.

Anyway, didn't pay attention if there was a name on them.

How big is big for elephant ears

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, mine never got taller than 4 feet. Did yours get any sun.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

They got after noon sun, but not a whole lot. One on the corner didn't get as big, only about 6 feet, but it got the most sun.
After they died down, I have these big old tree trunk things out there. Should I just dig them up take the bulbs off and replant. I'm going to move them to a corner , you know like they will be in the corner of the porch next to the house.
Since they were so big before, will they do that again? I'd rather they not be that big, they'll take over my house. They were like some kind of mutant.

Lorraine, I wouldn't move them until after your last frost. In definite, warm spring I'd lift the bulb without cutting the trunk...chances are some will die back more during the winter (at least they would here..lol). You may want to check out the aroids forum or look up elephant ears to try and determine which one you have.

They should be the same size unless like you said, it will be in more sun (which I think they would really need a lot of water in full TX sun to grow really happily, but I'm not positive about that).

and if they take over, you can always trade the babies :)

We may not get another frost. I moved one of them today, so I probably killed it!!! But it already had green coming out of it. When I dug it up, about a 1/2 feet of roots etc came with it.
I've got it in the shade now and it's between my porch steps and the house, so it stays pretty moist there. We'll see.
