planter box

San Antonio, TX

I need ideas!! What to plant on this shady area? It doesn't have drainage. I like something colorful that will cascade over the bricks, Heres some pictures!! ZONE 8 B.

My first thought is trailing nastursium at the front edge and regular nastursium in the middle/back of the box. They grow from seed almost over night. Just planted some today myself.

Might add some marigolds in the middle area.

If the bed doesn't get flooded, you could try Blackfoot Daisy, Melampodium leucanthum

This is a lovely perennial native plant, that blooms constantly and will cascade over the wall.

Oh my gosh...I have the perfect combo for your box that will be constantly damp and shady! Coleus (look for ones that do well in shade; it's a myth that they ALL do best in shade) for the back (any color, but dark ones would be the best contrast for what I'd do in the front: CHARTREUSE and PURPLE potato vine! They will both get HUGE, so leave room.

Be sure to place lots of gravel or rocks in the bottom for drainage.

This picture is of the coleus; these only got late afternoon sun.

Oh, and Please replace the soil with "Rapid Gro" from Home Depot or similar. It will make all the difference in the growth and health of your plants.

Here is the potato vine (the purple). IT grows so fast you will have to cut it every few weeks once it cascades over the side, but it will be a gorgeous contrast to your beautiful brick planter!
