Got a ?

Florence, AL

I have a old aquarium with pump, can I use this to grow some plants.
I thought I would take a piece of strofoam, and place holes in it to hold my plants. What type of nutients would I need? Will this work?

Pam, there are systems like you are talking about with pictures etc. I think in Propagation forum. Take a look there. It has been a long time since I have seen them, but i do believe it is an issue that is bumped up from time to time. In fact, I am just starting to experiment with hydroponics myself so I might look myself. If I find it right off, I will send you the link.

As far as nutrients go, I got mine from a regular hydroponics store. Those stores have tons of different ones for both hydroponics and soil so be careful you don't do like I did and pick up one for soil. LOL

Also, there is a thread in this forum of "horticulture", which was new to me until last night when I found it and it is really very intriguing. Take a look at it. But, after you read the author's discussion on it, be sure to go to the one the person is doing her/himself. Very interesting.

There are special Nutrients but I have used Miracle-Gro in the past

Will miracle gro work? I'm mostly going to be rooting like flower shrubs, just to get me some shrubs started.

Pam this site list many hydro nutrients and lots more items.

Different nutrients for different growing stages.
The miracle grow has more 'salt built-up' and should be changed more often, once a week, maybe.
Good luck and keep us posted, Dwight

Rentman, I am still on that first link you posted. So interesting. Thanks. Can't believe big tomatoes like that growing in 16 oz cups. Amazing.

I had lots of tomatoes last summer but they weren't grown in 16 oz cups.
I have over 140 tomatoes seedlings in the GH that need transplanting. I will put then out into a hoop type structure (in a month or so) to help keep them warm.
I'm just trying new things and loving every day.

It is fun to try different things isn't it. Do you have any pictures of your garden? Like a journal or???

So, what do you put 140 seedlings in?

I had a ton of pic but my computer HD crashed three months ago and Poof they were gone.
Wished I had saved more here. I have a number of post with pics check my name in the member list. We bought this home in KY just a year ago, moved from FL I had a big garden last summer.
A small GH came with the home , it had not been used in years and I've done a lot of work getting it back operating.
My son in law will get many transplants along with two neighbor , a lot of mine will be canned and dryed.
PS I'm also learning how to build a fire , something we never did in FL :)

LOL, after me: Gather kindling, pine cones, small scraps of wood, paper------ Good luck. Did you belong to Boy Scouts?

Fires are something we have almost every day in the winter, which lasts almost 5 months.

This is the start of one of the Hoop house for early tomatoes.
It will be covered with plastic, two more will be built over the other 2 raised beds.

Very interesting. Do you find that the bubble wrap helps a lot? What is that you have on the left wall? It looks like insulation.

Your tomato plants sure beautiful. Now, you are in zone 6. When do you plant them out? I know you said you put them in the hh in a month. The larger garden, is that for the tomatoes? What do you put in the other beds? Do you put anything besides tomatoes in the hhs?

Thanks for sharing. Really enjoy seeing what others are doing.

Jeanette , Yes 1" fome to the left , bubble wrap on the glass windows.
All this is a dream being played out... The little gardening I have done has been in South Florida. The large garden will be for many vegs. Corn , cuks , watermelon (love to make pickled watermelon rine) other melons and who knows.
The three small beds will grow tomatoes and sweet peppers. Another bed you cannot see 3'x70' will have blueberrys. The apple and peaches will be to the left of the driveway.
The last frost here is May5 , but what does the weather man know ?
I am checking soil temp in the 3 small planters and will set out some tomatoes, under hh plastic as soon as I can ???? I will post pic as I go along.
...
I also like to see what others are doing with their garden.

We have a much shorter season than you. End of May is the last frost date. When you have a short season 3 weeks is a lot.

What will you fasten the plastic to the PVC with? Those clamps they have for it? Have you used them before? How do they work?

You have a very nice setup. Looks nice. We are under 2 feet of snow.

We had a little snow in Dec, lasted a little over a day, had the biggest snow 2 weeks ago it stayed on the ground 3 days and then started melting in places. Had a 2 ft ice icicle hanging off the GH. It's 46 here right now.

I will use some type of clips, I may be able to cut a little larger pipe in half, I will need to get to the plants during their growth, but I will use a drip system to water.

We ended up using duct tape. If you use small enough pieces that still big enough to do the job maybe it won't look too bad. They sell those clamps by the bag. I don't know how much they cost. I wonder why you couldn't take a piece about 3 or 4 inches long and make only one cut and pull it apart enough to slip it over the pipe and plastic?? The same pipe that you used for the ribs.

Jeanette check my new post in Green House, you may find it of interest.
