CLOSED: Hey, NC Dave's Members! Let's make a deal!

Chesapeake, VA

Awhile ago, we had some discussion about the yellow cabbage collard plants from NC. The source we had was a place called the Collard Shack in Ayden, NC, run by a guy called Benny Cox. We obtained a phone number.

My dad finally got through and spoke to Mrs. Benny. She says they sell seeds but will not mail seeds, not even with a SASE with the money enclosed.

So, we need a warm body to pick up some seeds so we can trade with you and shower you with horticultural gifts in exchange for the seeds.

I've been saying "we" because I assume other people will want some, too.

So, what do you say, NC people? Does anyone live near the Collard Shack? Can we make a deal?

Another alternative, of course...is if some of those NC Dave's folks already HAVE yellow NC cabbage collards and are willing to trade...

what makes this plant special

Per my dad: "The reason we like it is that it is much more tender than regular collards, and the leaves are bigger. It is frost-resistant. It is lighter in color than regular collards (which are dark green) and much sweeter. It is a great favorite in the Carolinas and in Georgia."

Well...does it grow in Texas?

Are the collards really bigger in Texas?

I did a search and couldn't find a member of Dave's less than 25 miles from Ayden. I did however find Ayden's home page and a link for sending email for information.

I'd be willing to be if you sent an email making your request, that whomever gets it and reads it would probably be willing to go get some seeds if you send a SASE.

Worst that can happen is they won't reply.

Thanks for the link, Xeramtheum. I see that they have a Collard Festival on Labor Day weekend, with a collard-eating contest, and even a Collard Queen.

But no collard seeds :(

And where is Ayden? What part of NC?

Yotedog, 95 miles east of you, over by Greenville

Well, they say each person is separated from everyone else by no more than 6 people. So...we will eventually find someone who lives next door to Benny...

My DD is in Greenville at school. I don't know when I'll be back down there, but if you haven't found anyone to pick up your seeds by then, I'll swoop over for you. It's about an hour and a half from here.

Thanks, Bev! Let us know when you are going to make the swoop. I'll call Benny ahead of time to make sure they have the seeds.

My dad says the seeds are $3/ounce.

Another idea is that if your son happens to go near where Benny's is, he could pick some up, maybe, and send them to you.

Good news, everyone! Cousin Vel is going to get seeds from Benny's! Next week!

Glad that you won't have to wait on me:-)) I seem to have made that Greenville trip a lot lately and didn't know exactly when I'd get talked into it again. It's my daughter, BStar...much more needy, lol!!

I know how it is, Bev!
