pasty butt help
Pasting up can occur for a couple of reasons. One
is stress. You just recently brought them home, and
this is stressful. Sometimes if the chicks are too hot
it can cause pasting. You did the right thing by cleaning
it, but don't let it clog their vent as this can lead to death.
As the stress wanes, it should stop. If I find anything out
about special feed to help, I will post it.
may tammy's flowers be pretty
thanks truest, I will just keep an i on it and hope for the best
Boiled crumbled egg yolk helps chicks get over
stress, too. Are they eating and drinking alright?
may tammy never know stress
I found a feed supplement to help with pasting. Storey's
guide to raising chickens has been a valuable,
comprehensive source for me.If pasting continues
(past the stressor)combine a starter ration with an
equal amount of cornmeal or crushed, uncooked outmeal
until the pasting stops.
Other stressors include chicks being too cool, or too
crowded. If pasting continues past one week of age, it is
possibly due to intestinal disease, like coccidiosis.
I hope your chick feels better soon!
may Tammy always have healthy chicks

Thanks again, yes she does appear to eat and drink ,she is always off by herself, usually not with the other three. when i came home yesterday i didn't see any sign of any dried poop. same thing this morning, when you say cornmeal do you mean the stuff i buy in the store.some one suggested i give her some electolites like gatoraide or such. what do you think ?
Day old chicks need a heat lamp and 95 degree environment for a few weeks ,,,, temp dropping a few degrees weekly. The cold air makes their digestive systems freeze up. This is the MOST common ailment that newbies encounter with day old chicks. We've all seen it .... time and time again.
Thanks Photographer.
I have a 100 watt red light in one corner of the cage cage is 3 x 5 also have thermometer keeping temp at approx 95
I don't know about gatorade, but electrolytes can help.
Feed stores sell vit/electrolytes in a powder for the water.
2 tablespoons of sugar in a quart of water helps chicks
perk up, but I think the powder elec. mix would be better.
Have you seen her poop? If she pasted up, I would
look closely to make sure her vent is not clogged. If
it's internal, I guess you would not be able to see it.
Yes, plain old corn meal from the store.
They should start out at 95*, as Photographer suggested,
then reduce temps by 5* each week until feathered.
I hope the corn meal mix helps. I would go for the elect.
or sugar water to energize her if you're not seeing pasty
butt.
may the princess have sunshiny days
If the chicks are 1 week old, then reduce the heat to 90*.
At the end of next week, down to 85*,etc. If she is off to the
side, are the other chicks staying near the heat source, or
are they staying back from it too? If they hover right under
it, they are too hot, if they mill about happily, it is fine, if
they hang back, it's too hot. Too cold too hot- both
stressors.
may the princess be lucky in love
