New to hibiscus, need some help please

Lindenhurst, NY

Hi, I want to try tropical hibiscus. I live in ny, zone 6/7 so they will be in containers for the summer. What source online has the best sizes/quality for a bloom show this summer? I don't want something really small that will only give a few blooms.

Any specific suppliers or size I should order? Any specific hibiscus names I should look for?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

These three places are the general favorites around here
www.hibiscusplace.com
www.hiddenvalleyhibiscus.com
www.hypnoticblooms.com

Hibiscus place and Hyp. only sell one size plants, HVH also sells some smaller ones in 4" pots which are cheaper but less likely to bloom right away, so if you want immediate gratification I'd order one of their larger sizes or go with Hib Place or Hyp. Blooms. I'm not sure what sort of show you're expecting though--you will definitely get blooms, but these plants are still not huge, so for each plant you'll get a few blooms, then maybe it'll take a little break, then you'll get some more, etc. It won't be a constant thing where it's blooming almost every day all summer long when they're this size, but you'll still get a good number of flowers (if your growing conditions make them happy of course).

Hi Maureen, Another thing to consider with the links referenced above is - they are hybrid hibiscus so although they have beautiful blooms, are a bit more to care for esp. since they may be younger plants. Bloom frequency and numbers just won't happen unless it's an older/bigger plant. You may also consider getting the regular garden variety (gv) which usually blooms in abundance and frequency and also comes in many colors. They are usually pretty easy to care. Sun and water & you're good to go! You can get the gv at any Home Depot, Lowes, or Walmart. When in season HD also sells their plants online. I picked this one up years ago from HD, or Lowes

This one is also a HD purchase and during the summer my gvs bloom constantly!

Okay ok last one but you get the idea you can get gv that are beautiful, easy to care for and still put on a show! :) Good luck with whatever you decide - oh and I agree with Ecrane on the top three favs around here - check the threads on Martindales a couple months back and you'll ge the idea! :)

Carlos - Tried & True looks interesting - have you ever ordered from them? I don't see them listed/rated anywhere on DG

You wrote my name right at the first instance, Carlos. Without the "s" it's how it's told in Italy but I'm from Spain.
I didn't order from any site in USA as the shipment cost per plant can be higher than the cost of the plant itself. I know Tried & True from other forums and they, Randy & Annelle Cox, are recognized members of the AHS (American Hibiscus Society). They are offering quite varieties from the Tahitian Series, hybridized by Dick Johnson. This is his webpage

He has some really pretty ones but his Tahitian Solar Wind that the Cox's are selling has my name on it. LOL

Thanks for the reply Carlos - I figured they must be reputable to have dealings with Dick - for some reason I never came across their site before. I understand about the shipping - shipping here sometimes is costly.

Well, this is my 3rd attempt to thank all of you very nice people here.
I keep losing what I type.

You are all so very helpful, and I really appreciate it. And your pics are gorgeous!! I think what I'm going to do is wait and see what hd and lowes gets in this summer.

Have a great spring and summer
Maureen
