I couldn't believe my DH was out there petting this american finch on it's back. I thought, what the heck is going on. Has he become the bird whisperer or something? jeese. They all fly off when I open the door. And he goes out and pets them.
Ok, I give. When he came back inside he said the bird was blind in one eye, which was the side that he walked up on . He still could have flown off. I was sorry to hear he was blind in one eye.
WE've had some stray cats around here, the other day I saw some bluejay feathers in our back field. Makes me wonder if they'll snatch up the baby chickens I have coming this spring.

Couldn't believe this when I saw it.
Wow thats different! Hope the little Goldfinch makes it.
awww, so sweet! lol at the bird whisperer... men!
Remember reading an article about a totally blind Jackdaw (a species of crow). It was able to survive by using the auditory clues from other Jackdaws it was with (they are very noisy, sociable birds!). It could even fly up and land in trees, by following the calls around it, and flying slowly with its legs hanging down until it made contact with a branch.

Thats a great story!
Wow, great story of survival & love that the other birds at least tolerated him if not helped him :-)
This eye disease in the finch population is very sad.

kathy_ann, Neat pic.

I got a close up of this guy, he can't fly well either. Something's wrong with him, he's not blind, he's squinting both eyes and doens't fly, he could have been damaged by a cat or something like that. He's still around too. Saw him yesterday.
