gaiadisciple posed an interesting question on another thread. Do hoyas only sprout new peduncles from new growth? I too would like to know the answer to this. It seems to me that it would be possible to sprout peduncles from old growth as long as all the growth nodes had not been facilitated already. However, it would also be unlikely that would happen if the plant were actively engaged in producing new growth. So does anyone know a definitive answer to this whether from experience or research? Also, would it vary from species to species?
Interesting Question
so if I have a non-flowering plant, will trimming a few old vines cause it to redirect new growth energy elsewhere? I'm afraid to prune
I wouldn't be afraid to prune. Just prune older growth that has no peduncles. I take cuttings off my hoyas for trades and such, and if anything it actually seems to help growth in other places. Trim away!
As for peduncles forming on only new growth - I think that tends to be the case. I've never had a peduncle form on old growth. But that's just a guess based on my experience.

I am with Gabro...now that you mention it. Some hoyas like nummularoides drop their peduncles after blooming and regrow new ones to bloom on. I have never seen new peduncles grow on old growth.
