Perlite vs Vermiculite

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I was at the local garden center today and know that I need to add one of these to my raised beds that have become compacted and dense over the years. I also have compost to add also. The price was exactly the same so that is not an issue. Does anyone know which product would be better for assorted vegetables in a hot climate? Also, is there a formula as to how much to add per square foot or something? I am at a loss.

Why have your beds become "compacted & dense", and how do you "know" that you need to add perlite or vermiculite?

Hi - They have been abandoned for a couple of years and the dirt level has fallen dramatically. When you use a shovel to try to dig a hole it is like digging in concrete. They were also used as a fishing spot so many people and chairs sat on them. Now it's time to grow veggies again and keep everybody off. Any help will be appreciated.

I wouldn't add perlite or vermiculite.

I would add some garden soil or topsoil and some compost.

Compost for sure!

What was the original soil in the beds made of? What is the native soil under the beds made of? How deep are the beds?
