Show us your GIANT hoya plants!!!!
Some of these things have gotten so big I don't know what to do with them!!!! This H. obovata is only 3 years old and has almost outgrown me!!!!! I'm 5'9" and this plant is well over 4ft tall.
Giant hoyas!!!!
Holy Cow David!!!~
I have about 3 ginormous hoyas...I will have to see if I can get pics and post them before I have to leave for a super bowl party....I daren't make DH late, especially on account of my hoyas...he is pretty tolerant right now, and there is a HUGE David Liddle order coming my way! Ha.
By the way, you can send that lambii my way anytime, I have the perfect spot all ready for her.
Sara
Sorry for the bright fuzzy pictures but I never said I was photographer!!!! :)~
Oh my goodness ... great pic's everyone! I can only dream of my baby hoyas growing that large! Wow!
What do y'all feed those things? And, how often?
Gorgeous hoyas everyone!
Doug, I'm so glad I got to finally see that cummingiana! It is the nicest cummingiana I've ever seen. All the ones I have seen on the frequented hoya sites look strange (whether hanging or on a trellis) - it just seems like a tough one to keep neat. You've done a great job with it.
Gabi
Thanks Gabi! I will give you one thing; it is a tough brushy little Hoya that is hard to bend where you want it, but it is not overly brittle, and can be done with a little persistence.
Doug
Oh, I have a little pot of H. cummingiana - will have to get a trellis for it. I am amazed at the size of some of these hoyas!
Thanks for the tip, Doug. Mine is small-ish now, but ever since I've started to use artificial lighting (in addition to sunlight), it has taken off! So I'm going to need to get it started on a trellis pretty soon, and I hope it looks as good as your's when it "grows up" :)
Gabi
Gabi,
Here is the eventual replacement for my Hoya cummingiana. I took cuttings last September, and just started them on a trellis. Since taking the cuttings, it has put on eight inches of new growth, and yes I think your supplemental lighting will really make that thing grow. Mine never used to grow in the winter at all until adding the additional lighting.
Doug
Thanks for showing that pic - it's gorgeous. I just love that trellis by the way.
Gabi
A while back, someone posted that they used copper tubing to make a trellis. Was that you, Doug?
I like the way it looks and if it's like the pot I have, it will turn greenish from humidity. I think I'll give it a try and see how imaginitive I can be. LOL
Eileen
Eileen,
I have posted about it, but I can't take credit for the idea. Credit has to go to DMichael and Meltn. It works fantastic, but unfortunately with the price of Copper at record levels with no relief in site, it is not cheap. I bought a 50 foot roll a couple of months ago for $47.00. That would make five double "U" shaped trellises like the one shown, which are about 28" high. What is great about the stuff is that you can make it any size your heart desires.
Doug
Wow Doug,
The stems on your cumingiania are so thick!!! The little plant I have has stems that are about the size of matchsticks. Yours look gargantuan compared to mine. What are you feeding those things. Also, how old is your plant??
duncanji,
My mother plant is five years old. The "baby" is six or seven months old. I feed 1/2 teaspoon/gal. of MSU for tapwater fertilizer every watering, and flush it with clear water once a month or so.
Doug
Hmmm, I follow the exact same feeding regimen that you do. So it is not for lack of food, water, or light that my plant is so puny. I'm going to have to go have a talk with mine and tell him to get growing. I just love how your plant looks. It is so healthy!! Good job, you can really grow that one! :D
Duncan, Thanks for the praise. I'm sure if you give your plant a good talking to it will grow for you. Its funny; I have a few different Hoyas that are supposed to be really easy to grow, and I can't even get them to stop losing leaves let alone get them to grow. I've got a couple on the verge of throwing out. After awhile, I start questioning things like if my water is bad and other things, which probably don't even apply. I guess there are some plants that for whatever reason just don't want to grow for us.
Doug
Duncan...light might be a factor... I am finding it so. H. cumingiana seems to like lots of indirect very bright light!!!!!
