Just a curious newbie question.

Ok, all you Hoya Addicts, after reading on Epiforums how many cuttings some of y'all ordered in the latest D. Liddle order ... I'm curious - how many Hoya plants do you have in your collections? I'm a newbie and have @ 25 mostly smallish plants. I completely understand how easily one could end up with hundreds of these interesting and beautiful plants!

Long Beach, CA

Yep.....hundreds!

Wow! I could never manage that many, unless I got rid of most of my other house plants. Hmmm .. a house full of hoyas kinda sounds nice!

I used to have a bunch of cacti, succulents, and other houseplants. They all have new homes now, except for 3 that I decided to keep. I had to make room for more hoyas!!

I live in a one bedroom apartment that's slowly turning into a jungle! I have about 75 hoyas now, and after this David Liddle order and another order I'm expecting, I will have about 95. I have no clue what I'll do with the small ones once they get big!

Aside from growing hoyas I also grow cacti. I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 260-275 of them and my hoya collection is right around 300 now.

Gabi, I thought I had a small space, with a two bedroom house. I bet your apartment looks like a beautiful oasis! If I didn't have a husband and 4 cats my house would probably be full of plants! I think I'd be referred to as the Crazy Plant Lady! I have many, many plants but fortunately where I live they can stay out year round.

Oh, I had a large cactus collection about 30 years ago ... got tired of being stuck with those thorns so I gave them all away. I swore I would never own another plant with thorns but I do have a couple of Bougainvillea's ... just can't resist the beautiful blooms. I think I am going to plant them in the ground before long. Two are in hanging baskets and one is in a large pot. They get very long thorns the older they get!

dmichael: It sounds like you have a jungle as well as a rainforest! That is a LOT of plants! Would love to see photo's! Do you have a greenhouse or are all of these plants inside your house? I am amazed at how many plants some folks have. I haven't worked in 15 years and I don't find the time to take care of the ones I have ... keep saying I'm going to downsize!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Lin, I had 3 gh's but have totally eliminated the need for one of them altogether by doing some MAJOR downsizing!!!I now have a cactus house 14W x 10H x 26L and the hoya house which is 20W x 12H x 30L. I gave almost all of my tropical plants away to make room for more hoyas since you can NEVER have TOO many of them!!!!

I only kept the following tropicals which are also in the hoya house passiflora nigradenia,--chilean bell flower--,pony tail palm (green & variegated)--,norfolk island pine (7ft tall),--giant white calla lily (almost 6ft tall) and one other but I have no idea what it is.

That giant white calla is an awesome plant. The leaves are about 3ft long x at least a ft and a half or more wide and the flowers are borne on stems which are around 4 ft or more in length and they last for 3 weeks on the plant.

Wow! Nice size greenhouses! I gave my neighbor a Norfolk Island Pine years ago that I didn't have room for, she planted it in her yard. Another one got left behind a big shed in our backyard and eventually took root and the plastic pot disintegrated - I keep saying I'm going to dig that one up and transplant it somewhere where it's more visible! I have a Pony Tail Palm that has been sitting in the pot behind the shed for a few years now too ... I might have to find a spot and plant that in the yard too. A few blocks away I saw a beautiful specimen in someone's front yard - multiple headed. Down in Fort Lauderdale where my sister and family live there's a beautiful single trunk Pony Tail Palm about 8' tall in someone's front yard that I have admired for years!

I had no idea there was such a thing as a Giant Calla ... I bet that is magnificent! I have some of the regular ole small ones planted in my backyard. I gotta go google that giant one!

If I had those greenhouses, oh what trouble I would get into. I have orchids (approx 60) hoya (47 mostly new cuttings in 2007) dischidia (4) but I thought they were hoya when I bought them and cactus and succ. (approx 10). Most of these plants are outside around the pool. The pool is enclosed so the sun is not so intense. I also have a large pony tail plant that is over 20 years old. It was purchased at Woolworths 5 & 10 for 25 cents. I didn't know that there was a varigated one. I'll have to search for it.
