Hello fellow Chicken peeps I have a small flock of bantam cross and Genies I am currently incubating a variety of eggs 7 breeds. I have 3 kids and the older 2 are crazy about our birds! Today I raped one of our 3 month old birds in a towel and they watched home on the range with it LOL! Their mom is not as excited about this as I was LOL. Any way we have decided to hatch some Black Copper Marans, and I have been having some trouble finding them? If anyone has any ideas of were to find some available in the mid-west we will be sooo excited!!!! Well here is the real flock masters with their favorite pets!!
Looking for som Marans eggs.......Please help
What???? you raped a chicken???? naughty boy!!!
The flock masters are adorable!!!
Okay, but I couldn't resist that... The kids are cute as buttons. It's been a looooooong time since my daughter was that young. And, I remember making a pet out of our very first rooster. He became so tame he used to follow my brother down the block on his way to school. (I was too young to go to school). Oh, so long ago.
Well, have fun with playing "home on the range".
OHHHHHh, So cute!!!
I think Meyers Hatchery will have Maran hatching eggs. They may not be available yet, but they list Marans as one of their rare dark egg Standard breeds and they do let you select hatching eggs from any of their standard breeds. I had a pet rooster when I was 11, he was a black Cornish Game bantam and followed me everywhere--we used to go out in the fields and hunt bugs. It was paradise. One of my Buff Orpington rooster was very lovable too. He was always pulling on my pant leg so I would pick him up and carry him. I think some roosters are wonderful pets. Maybe more so when there are no hens around?
Freeat30, Just wondering is that roo a RIR?
Of course I said pet rooster. He was a buttercup and was beautiful. We had him about 6 or 7 years I think. As I said, I was too young to go to school so it was over a half century ago. If I were to get into fancies, I would absolutely have to get buttercups. They are beautiful birds, medium builds and pretty docile when handled a lot.
You are doing the right thing and getting the kids to handle the chickens. Since we have ours for eggs and meat, we don't make pets out of them with the exception of the roosters we plan on keeping. And even then, we don't tame them as much as we should for handling. (no kids around).
Yeah the bantam cross birds that I have don't ever seem to like being handled We don't hold them every day, it's hard being busy with 3 kids and my 2 yr old likes to hold on really tight and it has not been good if he sneaks out to their cage when they are small. Any suggestions on making the birds more tame?
Does meyers have Black Copper Marans? Other breeds of Marans are not that hard to find.
I haven't got the faintest about how to tame them more or where to find Black Copper Marans. I just have plain everyday chicklets. No bantams. Black Austrolorps and a middle-aged RIR rooster names Rocky.
Oh yeah, I also have two lorp roos names Bruno and Clyde.
That is A RIR roo a friend orders pullets only and didn't want that beauty! My son loves him if you can't tell!
Nope. I think Meyers only has the regular Marans. Can you describe the Black Copper Marans?--I really want a Maran, but I'm not that fond of the grey and black check pattern. Are their eggs as dark?
Regular Old Marans are actually really beautiful in person, just my two cents.
and a good excuse to add in a couple of my own chickie pix. Now I just need to get a couple children to add to these adorable chicken pictures !
I just have to get in on this.My daughter had a pet rooster when she was about 3 or 4.He just "took up ' with her, and would come in the house and watch Sesame Street with her.He would have roosted on that TV set, but no...I have forgotten the breed, I'd ordred chicks from Murray Mc murray( very good hatchery) and it was later after the chickens had grown up that this rooster decided to become her pet.I miss my chickens.
