Does anyone recognize this plant?

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

A friend gave me two long cuttings this summer of a his monster plant. Some of the leaves fell off on my drive home so I stuck the leaves into the pot when I planted it, and every leaf rooted! I would love to have an ID for this hardy guy! No flowers yet.

Hoya? :)

LOL, don't mind me ... I am so new to these hoya plants that I have to have help from others IDing mine too! Hopefully some of the knowledgeable hoya honcho's will come by soon and take a look. I bet someone could at least give you a tentative idea of which one it is, maybe not an exact name without blooms, but ya never know.

That's a very pretty plant, by the way!

Thanks, Lin!

Thats a Hoya carnosa.

Oh, thanks Liljeonvalj! I have a variegated one also, so I never would have guessed that, since these leaves are so different.

Long Beach, CA

That is the plain green one with the speckles on the leaves that is sooo pretty and hardy. It is one of my favs. My daughters too.
That plant has been passed around and shared for generations. When you hear people talk about being given a piece of their grandmothers hoya plant....that is usually which one it is.

I have one with LOTS of speckles on it, that Marcy is talking about. It was sold to me as H. motoskei, but it isn't H. motoskei. My motoskei is fuzzy on the backs of the leaves, which is how it should be, and the speckled carnosa I have is not pubescent on the undersides of the leaves.

There are so many clones out there of H. carnosa. So now I have the regular non-speckled one (well, it has a few specks on the leaves) and the speckled one....they really do look different. Here's a pic of the speckled one:

hmmm ... I think I have one that looks like that!

This is a photo of two Noids ... one given to me on the left as Motoskei but it is not fuzzy on the back of the leaves.
The smaller plant has flecks in the leaves and looks like the larger plant but leaves are smaller. I'm thinking both H. carnosa?

This one was given to me as Hoya Pink Silver but I don't know for sure what it is.

Lin, I'm a newbie but I keep wishing I could jump in that pool! So distractible! Here are more of my NOIDs. Perhaps this one is the same as your smaller leafed one in the 1st pic.

Lin,
The first 2 look like carnosas to me, and the 3rd does look like pubicalyx. You'll know for sure when you see blooms, and in a climate like that I'm sure it won't be long before you get some flowers!

Boojum,
That looks like another carnosa to me. Oddly, one of the leaves looks like H. globulosa (the one at the top of the pic), but obviously that's a lighting issue or something, cause it wouldn't be possible to form a leaf from a different species!

Gabi,
The last pic's leaves are more veined and much lighter than my dark leafed carnosa. Are there lots of carnosas? Do you mean the skinny leaf looks like globulosa?

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Boojum,

Yes, there are lots of different carnosa subspecies (e.g., H. carnosa 'Chelsea', H. carnosa 'Krimson Queen', H. carnosa 'Krinkle 8', and many more - H. compacta, also known as hindu rope, is also a subspecies of carnosa).

But when I said H. carnosa may be the one in your last pic, I meant the plain green H. carnosa (just like the ones in your first pics). There are many different clones out there (just take a look at my speckled one above..you'd never think that was a plain carnosa!). So just because the last one you posted has lighter leaves with more veining doesn't mean it's not carnosa. But making an ID guess with just foliage is just that - a guess. You need flowers to get the true ID of a hoya.

So I still *think* it is H. carnosa, but I could be wrong. About the globulosa statement - I wasn't saying it could be globulosa, I was just pointing out that the one leaf looked like it.

I get it. The globulosa, was it the skinny leaf? I'm trying to learn something (always hard!).

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Oh, sorry. Yeah, the skinny leaf up top. Very pretty leaf!

:( There's only one photo of H. globulosa in Plant Files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57747/

and you can't see much of the leaves

edited to say: Eeew! I don't want that one if it really smells like rotting garbage!

Gabi, that is really nice! You need to upload that pic to PF.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Oh, nice one!

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks :)

I need to learn how to do that - I have no clue how, but I'll figure it out. I'd love to upload some pics there.

Scroll to the bottom and there's a place to add a pic. It won't show up right away (they screen them) but it will be there in a few days.

Thanks for the link.

You're welcome!

I think it is unfair to give descriptions of scents... it may smell like rotting cabage to one person and Chanel *5 to someone else!!!!
