Terrarium / Aquarium

Carson City, NV(Zone 6b)

Hi Everyone,
I've really enjoyed reading about the different types of terrariums and I thought I would finally share mine. My tank is two feet tall, three feet wide and 15 inches deep. I added dividers to make deep and shallow sections of water and there are dividers parallel to the back that make sections for dirt about three inches wide. It took a couple tries to get the dividers sealed so the dirt doesn't fill up with water and become a swamp.

The lower section of soil is filled with orchid bark and there are several orchids planted there. All of the orchids are ones that I bought from the clearance rack and they seem to be doing okay so far. The big brown things are pieces of pine bark and there is some bird netting holding up the bark. The upper ssection has regular soil with a philodendron that has gone wild and a pitcher plant that was added since the photo. The blue thing is the filter.

Water is pumped from the lower undergravel filter up to the top of the box filter which empties into the upper water section. There is a small waterfall in the middle of the partition between the water sections.

The top of the tank has lights and a vent fan, all of which run on a timer during the day. At night it gets very humid in the tank without the fan running.

Whew! Okay, next some critter photos.

Here some of the guppies that live in the lower section of the water. There is also a big yellow snail in the background.

Here is the blue gourami that lives in the upper section. He is a bully so he gets the whole section to himself. You can see the roots of the philodendron growing aginst the back partition.

Thanks Threegardeners. It took a few tries to get it right.

Here is one of the tree frogs (from the outside).

How great is that! A vivarium! I have always wanted to do one of those, but just have never made the time or space. Good job!!

Katlian: Absolutely Amazing job! I would say you have yourself a terrarium/aquarium/vivarium all in one! Are the plants all growing in water? I am a bit confused about the sections ... do they all hold different levels of water? I see the philodendron roots in soil but the gourami fish obviously in water. And, what about the orchids, are they just above the water in that section? I can only imagine the time it took to do something like that - great job!

The two sections at the front of the tank hold water while the two thinner sections at the back hold soil. Four sections in all.
