Was checking on one of my bantam hens today, as I've noticed fewer eggs over the last few days. When I checked her this morning, it appeared her cloaca was prolapsed (sticking out). She is a heavy layer, so I presumed it was from a large egg, or low calcium. Ran to the drugstore and picked up some first aid supplies, made a separate cage for her, then turned her over this afternoon to apply ointment etc., only to discover she was perfectly normal!
Checked all the other girls, just to make sure I didn't have the wrong hen, but everyone was normal. Did I imagine this, or does the tissue sometimes protrude from their cloaca just after laying, then return to normal? It was sticking out in a large mass perhaps 2 X 2 inches, and remained out this morning no matter how I held her, and after I put her down. She has not laid today (or this morning), but seems to feel fine. Did not feel an egg "stuck" anywhere....Worrying it will happen again.....What gives? Any suggestions? Thanks
Prolapsed cloacaNow you see it, now you don't.....
I wish I knew the answer to that one. I will follow to find out if
anyone else has seen this.
I had two baby skunks that did that, but it was something
they suffer from often. There wasn't much to do about
it other than using soapy water to coax the rectum back in,
not the same on a hen, I know. Then, hope it didn't
happen again til their muscles were better developed.
Rectum?
Nearly killed 'em!
( I couldn't resist)
ROFLOL!!! Uhum, the skunks were...
HAHAHAHAHAH, quite funny Backyardhen. I think you might want to watch the caffeine for awhile....
Ok, back to the serious topic at hand! Anyone experienced this? Anyone? Help me out here......
