Abutilon, Double Flowering Maple 'Pleniflorum' (Abutilon pictum)
OK, LOL. You have my attention. I have never seen this double before. I have a double pink one but never an orange one. You know I now want this one. LOL
I got the double pink last year and I had never seen a double abutilon before that one. I now wonder if there is a whole double flowered lot of abutilons out there that have escaped my eagle eye. LOL
PS How did you decide on that name? It must be a hybrid.
This is indeed an unusual bloom. I arrived at the 'Pleniflorum' name (which I do not know for sure if this is a correct ID) after days of research. At several of the Hawaiin websites, a "new" type of Abutilon pictum named 'Penidlorum' was mentioned that was being used in lei making. It was described as having very dense stamen that filled the whole bloom up making the bloom appear to be a double. The problem was that I could nerver locate a good closeup photo of the bloom of 'Pleniflorum'. This bloom doesn't appear to have just a whole lot of stamen. It appears to be a true double to me so I am not sure of its ID.
We obviously need to go to Hawaii on a fact finding mission. I think Dave's Garden should fund it. LOL
Hey, that's a good idea! I know right where that Kula Ace Hardware and Nursery is where Forest or Kim Starr took the photo of the plant. :o) Because the photo has a September of 2007 date, it may be the new cultivar that the lei makers were talking about. You would think that there would be numerous photos of it because it is so unusual.
I heard that place went out of business so I think we will need to tour the island in search of it.
We may have to search several of the islands. :o)
Maybe even the bottom of the ocean too.
*giggle* When you all get done searching, let us know what you find and if we need to do some correcting on the entry.
Kell, we will need some snorkling gear for sure. If we can't find some plants, we might find some lei made with these flowers that have been thrown into the ocean which is the custom when you are going to leave. At least we could have a better look at the blooms.
JoanJ, will do it. :o)
Joan, maybe you need to come with us, just to verify our results.
I sure hope we can find a lei with seeds at the bottom of that big, blue, beautiful, warm ocean with tropical fishes swimming around!
I'm there! I've always wanted to explore the ocean life. :)
Well, hot diggity dog! Orange double bloom and a trip to Hawaii, count me in!! We NEED this one Kell!
joan and Calif_Sue, yes, yes, would love to have you. I hope we can fly first class. I travelled there on American Airlines (business class) and the seats sure were uncomfortable. It was a loooong trip from San Antonio (it will be a really long trip for you, Joan). If we go with American Airlines, we need to take our own food. My behind took about a month to heal (no joke!). They provide drinks; however, one must buy sandwiches that cost $5.00 that are very stale. I can't remember what else they had; but it was awful. I told my husband that if we ever go again and have to use AA that we shoiuld make a bunch of tacos to sell on the plane. We could keep them warm in thermal bags. :o) My stepdaughter, her husband and a friend flew with Hawaiian Airlines and they didn't have to pay for food plus their behinds were not sore. Hawaiian Airlnes was unavailable to us.
