Looking for thoughts - constant ear infections

Cedar Rapids, IA

Hi all --- I normally don't post over here but I thought I'd see if anyone has run into this. I have two wonderful dogs. A lovely 6 year old Shiz Tzu and a 4 year old Giant Schnauzer. My Shiz Tzu Lizzie has been healthly all her life great girl to have. But my Giant Schnauzer has been fighting ear problems since she was about 2 years old. We constantly are cleaning her ears which was fun at first but she has now gotten quite used to it. Making sure to remove any hair around the area, she's been knocked out to have the vet go in a clean out her ears twice now but I decided we needed to get a different opinion. Finally the new vet cultured the ear that we have the most problems with and it didn't come back good. 12 different bacteria's have made their mark. We've been treating with Antibodic's for 10 weeks also with prednisolone for 6 weeks. The left ear is now free of any bacteria but the right ear is still showing cultures. Things are getting better but the vet is talking about two different procedures to resolve. She stated that we may never be able to get the ear completely clear because of the design of the ear itself (may be a congential defect). I can't remember the names of the procedure but one is where they go in and cut open the ear canel so that it's easier to drain and clean, the other is removing the ear canel and drum and closing the ear up. I've done some research but would really like to hear if anyone has gone though either of these procedures.
