No idea what this dog is eating but it happens a couple times a year. He digs little holes in the back yard and eats something. Last night he was outside for a good hour and when he came back in he was fired up. It's annoying especially at night, he's outside for a long time and when he gets in he runs around and barks. My other dog doesn't eat whatever this dog is eating. Doesn't stop him from joining in the chaos.
Anyone have a idea what he's digging up? I'm assuming fungus of some sort.
Oh no it's truffle eating season
Forgot, at parties he likes to drink beer. That's why he loves those 16oz solo cups, easy access. In dog years he's around 50 so he should know better. I think I'm going to have to check him into rehab. It's my fault though. When he was a puppy I brought him all over town to a party here and a party there. Wasn't even a year old and he was in a bar. He was living the fast life. Sports car , boats, the beach. LOL. I guess I'm to blame.
LOlololol What a cutie! But what is it he's eating??
I wasn't kidding about truffles. http://www.natruffling.org/faq.htm
I don't know why he would get so whipped up eating truffles though.
They're REALLY tasty, CoreHHI??
That dog might be on to something.

If I knew exactly what they looked like I could sell them to the resturants on Hilton Head. $80-90 a pop. LOL. Dog does the work. The way he's been grabbing them it would be something like $2000 an hour.
He did it again last night. Went out and I forgot about him. Went to bed and was sound asleep when I hear a dog barking and barking. Took a minute to realize it was him. LOL. He had been out digging truffles for at least an hour and a half.
I think they really are truffles.
Ok, so your dog is trying to show you how he can support himself, and you're just ignoring him? lol ;)
A couple of thoughts -
1) If he's acting goofy after eating these things, are you sure he should be eating them?
2) You should follow him around one evening and make sure that's what he's into, and if he is, train him to give them to you!!!
After looking at these things (http://www.natruffling.org/photo.htm) I don't know if I could eat them, and I love mushrooms.
Also, it says in one of those sites that they use dogs to find truffles, so your little critter could just be doing what comes natural. :)
Truffle oil is good in sauces etc. it's not really eaten in big pieces as far as I know.
As far as the dog he's digging maybe an inch or two down and eating something small. He seems to find whatever close to trees. I'll try to grab whatever he eating and see what it is. He does eat one type of mushroom in the spring, can't remember which one right now but he will only eat that one. Only problem is the mushroom gives him very foul gas.
very interesting...except the foul gas, not fun for the humans...lol
My dogs dig around and eat something in the dirt-have yet to figure out what it is, but I thought maybe grubs. Whatever it is, it's always gone by the time I get to them - and their faces covered in dirt. My little schnauzer cross is especially fond of eating something out of the dirt.
Adorable dog, that dog of yours.
Oh darn, no truffles and I thought we are all going to be invited to a feast.
Speaking of mushrooms, it's that time again, the stinky stinkhorns are popping up around here. Gassy dogs have nothing on these things.
Considering the symptoms those little mushrooms might be another kind of really expensive mushroom.I've heard about people doing all kinds of things after eating them.Just hearsay,no personal experience.
LOL
Sounds like you need to serve up some "Beano" along with the truffles.
apple cider vinegar - that's what cures the gas at my end (opps...pun just happened). However, I've never tried to give it to a dog.
:-)
My dog is cream colored and he was getting a reddish tint where he licked or chewed himself. I was told to put a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar per quart of water and it would change the pH of his saliva and the red would go away. I tried it and my dog is a cream color again, no more red spots. No idea if it works for other problems.
CoreHHI: He's an adorable dog at any rate. I love his ears in that photo. :)
Just something I've heard about, in the NY Times last year, I think, that there is a type of truffle that is indigenous and grows beneath Pecan trees, I think. Some say they are useless, some say they are delicious, and some restaurants in Atlanta have been buying them.
But, of course, if those mushrooms are of the type that hippies used to collect from cowpies in the Pacific Northwest, your doggie may be having some wild dreams!
You don't have to go to the Northwest. The hippie mushrooms grow wild here. Find a cow feild after a good rain and you'll have garbages of them. I know a guy who went nuts when he figured out they grow wild here. He collected so many that he couldn't dry them out fast enough and his apt. ended up smelling like a dead body. LOL. He was trying to get rid of them to anyone who wanted them. I'll pass on the shrooms but it was funny.
Hmmm, Speaking of smelly mushrooms, Karlmale may not want to move here if he smells any stinkhorns aka dead man's fingers. :-))))
I have a stinkhorn out in my yard somewhere today. Nasty smell.
I have finally figured out that the worst smell is when the little white puff ball just starts to crack. They are really ripe then; it actually gets less objectionable after the fingers emerge.
Your dead right. I look for those and get rid of any I see.
are yall talkin about those orange things that stick up from the ground???

Funny to think these things grow all over the country; I never heard of them anywhere else but here.
ok...yeah i've seen those
Is that ear always standing up like that? Toooo cute!! :))
He is adorable. He looks a little like our Scottie, Bonny. Is he a Schnauzer?
Yes he's a black schnauzer, papers and all. Probelm with the black ones is they usually aren't show dogs, LOL. This guy is CJ and he's just not right. His legs are to short, ears are to big (one sticks up) and he has strange hair. I tried taping quarters to his ears when he was a puppy which worked for a while to keep his ears down. The one ear started popping back up and I just left it that way. Gives him character. On the good side he is really mellow for his kind. Well know in the neighborhood. I've heard rumors of him letting himself in peoples houses and watching TV with them. ??? He's good with gates, doors etc.very smart dog.
