Greenwash.
I found this article on Project Green and it puts what I feel into words much better than I can. I see a lot of packaging lately that says "Made with Organic Ingredients" in large letters right on the front of the box. A look at the contents, however, may show just a small fraction of organic ingredients are used, yet the average consumer is easily duped. Greenwashing seems to be an epidemic.
Quoting:
--Mother Jones magazine“the term is generally used when significantly more money or time has been spent advertising being green (that is, operating with consideration for the environment), rather than spending resources on environmentally sound practices. This is often portrayed by changing the name or label of a product, to give the feeling of nature, for example putting an image of a forest on a bottle of harmful chemicals. Environmentalists often use greenwashing to describe the actions of energy companies, which are traditionally the largest polluters.”
I find this fascinating. Companies would lie to us to sell products to cash in on the current rage? No. Say it ain’t so! The entire article is found here: http://branchsmith.typepad.com/project_green_industry/2008/01/jyme-chooses-a.html
The article mentions “The Six Sins of Greenwashing”
1. Sin of the Hidden Trade-Off
2. Sin of No Proof
3. Sin of Vagueness
4. Sin of Irrelevance
5. Sin of Fibbing
6. Sin of the Lesser of Two Evils
