Redpolls - how far south are they this winter?

Dewitt, MI(Zone 5b)

Male Common Repoll at my feeder Saturday. Had hundreds about a month ago. They have thinned out and my seed budget isn't getting slammed too hard now.

Very nice pic Stelco! They are such cute little birds!

I had a few of these and I would have never noticed unless you had pointed out to me that I might have them. Very exciting.

Thanks pellatory!

They are almost always passed up as House Finches, or Purple Finches, Lauren. It's been REALLY cold in Canada this year. Enjoy them while you can. They probably won't be this far south for years.

I'm in northwest Illinois and had two this year. I looked at the current Christmas bird count and saw that in Illinois they were as far south as Carlyle Lake.

This is so amazing. I just got finished talking to my dad about this odd bird I saw at my
feeder. He suggested Redpoll. I looked it up and sure enough, it was. Too cool. Spotted them here in Milton, NH. Which is in the southeast NH, at the bottom end of the Lakes Region. No film in the camera. Darn. A small flock visited in Jan. too. It seems they do a southern dip every two years, but this extra southern one is probably weather related.

I had my third sighting this week, but still only ONE. Sure not the flocks that Burn is getting.

I am getting them on a daily basis. I kid you not, I am literally getting at least 4 a day. They seem to gravitate toward my largest bird feeder which has safflower seed in it. These are really a welcome addition to my yard. The other thing I notice about them is that they don't seem to be intimidated by other species. While my female cardinals stay in the trees waiting for the crowds to die down, these redpolls fly right in and I've seen them wing to wing with every single bird that visits. Way cool.

They are adorable, I will be sad to see them go back north.

This was my first sighting, on Dec. 24.
