DH brought home daffodils from the supermarket...

Conyers, GA

what do I do with them? I've been gardening for a few years but I still feel very much a beginner, especially with bulbs. He brought me a Canna home two years ago and last spring, I had some really great leaves, but no flowers. So, now I have about five pots of spent daffodils...are they worth planting? If so, do I cut the stems off? Any advice would be great!

Hi! Ikbowyer! Welcome to DG. And good question about Daffs...

Mmmm--- I suppose if you have a garden space for them you could stick them into the ground and see what you get next year...they may take a full year to regroup and bloom again, but, depending on the kind of daffodil you have, there may be a chance for them...

About the canna--I know they take a good amount of fertilizer and water and can use some sun if you have some.

Mine were glorious the first year but were rather pathetic the following year, and I think it was because of lack of sunshine--or maybe I should have dug them up and overwintered the rhizome in the garage and I didn't bother...

If you like Cannas there is a Canna co-op going on the Co-op thread--the supplier is Horn Cannas, very well know grower, and all you have to do is call them up and place your order and give them the Dave's Garden co-op code. Worth checking out, I think...

There is a lot of Canna growing info on their website, too.

Good luck and welcome to DG!

Thanks tobasco, for the welcome and the advice! I have about 30 plants from the ones DH brought home so I guess I'll just put them out there and see what I get. :-) I love Cannas so I'm going to go on over and check out the co-op. Thanks for the tip!

Linda, I always plant the daffodils that come in pots from the grocery or where ever. Sometimes they don't bloom the next year, but often they do. Daffodils are my favourite flower. You can never have too many. :-) These were blooming Saturday.
