Question about my new lap top

I got a new laptop this week,
It is a HP-it has Windows Vista Home premium
When I first got it if I had a bunch of windows open, I could put the cursor over them and got a preview of the window and could see if it was loaded (I am still on dial up)
I changed the background and a couple of things like that and now it only gives me text when I put the cursor over the window.
I found the option to show preview in the place where you set up the taskbar, but it will not let me select it, it is a lighter color and will not let you put a check inside it.
Can anyone tell me how to get this back?
I also cannot find anything with spell check?? Any hints there?
