I have been thinking about the College Station Roundup and as this is my first, I am trying to think of what I have to share. Looking around my yard it seems that my ginger is really getting out of control. Would think be a good thing to try and separate and bring to the trade? Does anyone know when and how I would do this? I attached a picture that was taken today and it has some frost damage, but otherwise it is usually very pretty.

pinstripe (?) ginger
No idea - but that is a stunning plant. My gingers never get to the point to need split! You are one lucky gardener.
AnnieJo, Outstanding photo. I am trying to start ginger root that I bought at HEB. How did you start yours? Is yours an edible variety?
I would love to know the same... and would you send a little for postage!
You can plant ginger root from the store and it will grow? I don't know why that just amazes me . . . it works for potatoes and garlic . . . I will have to look into that, just to try!
My landscaper puts these in last March, in several clumps around my shaded front yard and they have all at least doubled in size. The reference on the bill to this plant says Alpinia SA. The DG page lists an Alpinia sanderae so that may be what this is. As for sharing, I would be glad to except I have no idea how best to do this. One more really hard freeze and this will probably completely brown up and be dormant. Would this be the time to dig?
I would think so -
I did not know you could grow from the store myself... what a great idea to get things started.
Somewhere I read that your typical grocery produce is sprayed with something to keep it from sprouting - that way it lasts longer. Somebody advised that you should buy your potatoes from a feed store or such to increase your chances if you wanted to plant them. I don't know if this would pertain to a ginger root or not.
Dont know - there are some Asain stores near here and I think they might be the best.
AnnieJo - somebody needs to tell the potatoes I buy at HEB (then promptly forget about) what was sprayed on them! lol
I have grown ginger from the grocery store. You plant the hand of ginger horizontal to the soil and bury it only an inch or so under the topsoil. The one I planted has produced many more hands but never delivered a bloom.
If you buy one from the store, find one that has "eyes" like a potato does. The plants grow from the eyes. That was what made me plant one the first time. They were green and appeared to be ready to sprout. It is not a pretty foliage but an edible ginger...
Goodness! My gingers won't get that tall since they are freezing back in the winter, correct? Have you ever had to subdivide them?
What a great and stunning ginger, how long has that been growing.
