Another Franklinia alatamaha winter bud picture, from today at Welkinweir estate in Pennsylvania 6b... Growin, is that a flower bud on the left in your picture?

It's a very pronounced, long conical bud imo. I notice the plant in your pic also has the same tip die-back. I think the bud to the left in my pic is a flower bud but I wasn't sure. I guess I should go back and find out. Did you see anything like that on the plant at Welkinweir Estate?

No, none at all, but this was a young tree about five feet high. Never been there before and I couldn't find the other larger trees.

I'll keep an eye on the one at VanDusen and see what happens. I know it's been there for a few years.

If each of you are referring to the rounded structure on the very tip of the stem on the far left of growin's picture...I think that is the seed structure. It is formed where a flower was pollinated, and ripens and splits in the following year.

It is a very woody structure, and the one in growin's picture looks odd compared to what mine looks like here in the yard.

I will try to take a picture of the seed structures on my plant when there is a bit more light.

Thanks VV. It did kinda look woody.
