I have EE's roots that were given to me after the frost had knocked them down. I dried them, cleaned the dirt off and put them in the garage in the dark...well, they're sprouting. Can I pot them now to keep inside? how deep do you plant them? they are the size of baseballs. Thank you, Deb
Help with an Elephant Ear root
Deb, I have EE's outdoors but am no expert. Would suggest you repost your question on Tropical Gardening. Lots of very knowledgable people to answer.
Thank you very much. I think I have it solved....I went ahead and potted them up and will keep them in the garage 'til it warms up...we have alot of snow here and temps down in the single digits so we will see what happens....thank you for responding, tho.....Deb
They will need light if they get green shoots, so you might need a show light or such.
Thank you, Mitch....they have green shoots right now from the tuber....Deb
Deb..
yes.. they are pretty uncoperaive here also.. I cut them down to the tubers in November.. I took off all the dirt I could and put them in a plastic bag.. in under a ladder in the hallway.. no water or light.. .. they have now sprouted also... and are now 3' to 4' tall.. poking their way through the plastic... to start life again.. I guess the charged up life in the bulbs... respond to heat and perhaps time in dormancy .. as a signal to begin growth... I've got to pot them along to remove them from blocking the fire exit to the building up to the roof...
I have this dormancy problem with lots of my plants... I've no cool space to allow them an extended sleep here.. so my brugs and plenty of others I have to keep alive and growing... the bulbs usually fair better.. but the EE are so charged... nowto find a place for them under the 3 HID lights.. or cutting the light off from one of the windows.. when they do go outside.. I'll have to acclimate them slowly to the strong outside light.. under a 50% shade cloth for a month or so..
good luck with yours there...

Gordon, I have a peony that I got after everything was frozen solid here this fall so I potted it, put it in the dark in the garage, couple of months went by and it was sending shoots up right & left so I covered it with a piece of plywood and I haven't had the courage to look since...I found a site googling "Planting EE" which said you can pot them pretty much whenever they put out shoots so that's what I did....we have an insulated garage as well as a shop so I do have places to pull the wine barrels in to over winter and all the geraniums go under the house but this is my first time with EE. I'm growing them to use their leaves for hypertufa bird baths...we have snow forecast every day this coming week with highs in the teen's so the plants still slumber here....have a wonderful day....Deb
