Hi,
My landscaper put this in my yard last year, it is the only plant I have not identified. The leaves are very soft, it seems to want to bloom but never has (buds show the bloom would be purple). If I can identify the species I can see what I might do to encourage blooms this spring/summer.
help with plant identification, Houston
bohnnco, It could be a Glory flower, Princess flower.
(tibouchina urvilleana)
It is Princess Flower, now I recall my landscaper say that as well...thanks!
I am very curious why it never bloomed last summer, in full sun. It looks incredibly healthy, even in our damp, chilly weather. I may prune some of the dead stems. There is plenty of green and I hope it will bloom this spring.
bohnnco, According to what I have read, they don't like full summer sun or heat. They need some afternoon shade here in Texas. The plant did produce buds. So there is something stressing the plant just before the buds open that causes the buds to fall. Without knowing what cultural practices you used on it, it's difficult to guess at what may have caused the problem. You might try keeping a log or dairy indicting when you water, fertilize, daytime temperatures around the time it produces buds, condition of the plant just before the buds open, etc. You might also try providing some afternoon shade to see if that helps it retain the buds. They also prefer moist, rich well draining soil. One in bloom is a lovely sight!
I am happy to say mine is full of blooms here in late Feb. It is pretty stunning.
A pic please?
