I'm looking (at FCN) at either Scott Pratt or Irma Bryan for a red, medium sized tree. Any comments, please? Compared to a Dwarf Deciduous, what are the size ranges in your experience? I really want a strong red, and not too tall, with a nice fragrance. Shouldn't be hard. :-)

Looking at reds
Thanks, Hetty, SP is sounding good. I'll need to keep these in pots since it gets very cold here in Dec-Jan and I'll need to move them into the greenhouse or screened room then. I don't want to start with something I know is going to be very tall.
Kathleen, I just bumped up the Thai Thread for you. Don't forget to look at some other reds including Siam Ruby, Siam Red, and a few others. My Siam Ruby is blooming in the greeenhouse, and it is gorgeous! I don't have my camera right now so I can't take a picture, but I will later.
Thanks, Clare. They are beautiful, but a bit pricey for my budget. Are the Thais generally smaller? I thought perhaps I could get two new ones this year, maybe I should go for just one instead. I'm glad I started thinking about this early. :-)
Hi Kathleen, I don't think the Thai reds are necessarily smaller, but I don't know about the growith habit of Siam Red or Siam Ruby yet. Mine are still fairly small. This link below will give you some information about the growth habit of some reds. Hilo Beauty and Scott Pratt are the darkest reds listed: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/pdf/OF-31.pdf Other gorgeous reds include Hurricane and Kauka Wilder.
That's such a good resource, Clare. Now I'm leaning toward Hilo Beauty, since the keeping quality is a little better and FCN describes it as medium. It seems to suit the bill.
That's good to know, Hetty. I like compact:-)
Hilo is a beauty, Kathleen. I don't think you can go wrong with it;-)
I have an ulterior motive, as well. I think DH would really like the red, and if he does, he'll encourage me to get more! lol
