local nurseries

Plano, TX

i have been getting help from dave's gardeners concerning veggies --but am not sure i am ready to grow tomatoes from seed -- i got a catalog from COOKS GARDEN ( really a fun catalog but haven't used them--anyone want to share experiences with them?)---- they sell plants ---so-------- wonder if i could find a local nursery in north texas to buy veggie plants? lowes sells a few but i was hoping for a bigger selection--

Linda,
I used to live in Carrollton and it seems that the Calloways always had good vegetable plants. However, if you want to come to Austin and shop around ,The Natural Gardener has some wonderful veggies and it is worth it just to visit this nursery if you haven't. I'll meet you there!

Small family owned feed stores usually have a good selection of locally proven varieties. Some sell loose seed too, which is great because I've never had a need for more than one squash seed.lol

I've never bought plants from Cook's Garden but I have bought seeds from them in the past. They have interesting lettuce and salad greens (arugula, etc) varieties. I hope I'm not offending anyone here but I hate iceberg lettuce salads. =)

I vote for Calloway's too. I think most of the nurseries have nice veggies. Northhaven, Redenta...

In agreement with Cocoa_lulu on the local feed stores. They do this year in and year out. They have a good handle on what the local produce gardeners prefer. Many of their customers are market growers too. I have bought my seed taters already from a local feed and seed.

LOL on the one squash seed. Do you really ask to buy just one?

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

I always plant two squash seeds as the birds or other critters will eat one seedling. lol

Pod, that would be funny. I may have to try it someday...just to mess with them.lol The seed is sold by the ounce, so I just put the larger seed all on the scale at the same time.

Pat, your brave. I don't dare plant two, I'm afraid they'd both live.lol

Linda, there is a very nice feed store in Plano -- Wells Brothers on 15th near the Spring Creek intersection. They sell vegetable seedlings (along with a fabulous selection of organic gardening materials). Check 'em out.

I love buying seeds from catalogs. Sure they don't always work out but it is so much fun when they do. I also love starting garden plants from seeds. Nothing is more gratifying than picking food from a plant grew. I'm starting to sound like the guy on Green Acres :)

If you have a favorite Calloway's store, please be sure to add a review to their entry here: http://gardens.com/search/index.php?site=gardens&keyword=calloway%27s

And here's Wells Brothers in Plano: http://gardens.com/go/view/17878/ and Natural Gardener in Austin: http://gardens.com/go/view/928/

If you buy via mail order, the Garden Watchdog is a great place to share your opinions, and/or check out what other customers think before you buy: http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/
