Sick koi - help!?

Mesa, AZ

Hi! I usually hang out in the SW Gardening forum, but have a couple koi ponds and for the first time ever- sick koi!

We have lost 2 koi in the past week and this weekend I notice that 3 others have the same 'stuff' on them. These all came from the same place, we have had them for about 2 months. All the other koi (fingers crossed) do not show any signs of this problem. I am attaching a photo of the problem.

I am on my way to the store for a water test kit, I know I should have one, but we have never had any issues in the past 10 years, so I don't have one and know nothing about what can go wrong with fish, beside ich of course!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry, I don't know what your fish has. But you need to check out bonniesplants.com She has a good web site with alot of information. If you go to her forum for Koi care she answers fast.

Ugh! How awful! It looks like either Fungus or Velvet. More whitish color, it's Fungus and if it is yellow to golden color, it's Velvet. Uniodized graduated salt baths can work wonders and malachite, a commercial product works too. Personally, I always start with a 10 day salt bath and then if that doesn't cure it, I go to Commercial Products. The chemicals disturb the natural chemical balance of a fish whereas the old fashioned salt treatment does not.

Add 1 teaspoon of uniodized Table Salt to each gallon of water(6-10 gal water works well for a medical tank). Add the same amount of salt that night and twice the next day, again in the morning and at night. If the fish is not improving by the third day or fourth day,add 1 more teaspoon of salt each day. On the ninth and tenth days, make progressive water changes and check for results.

The other thing for the future health of your fish is a UV light if you don't have one in your pond already. I have had great success with mine, saved time and money, and rarely have to give salt bath treatments anymore☺

Good Luck, it is always a heartbreaker when fish become ill.

Sorry to hear.

Looks bacterial.

Try Prazi Pro, salt bath, and medicated food.

The way I do a salt bath is I get a 5 gallon bucket, put the salt in with pond water, out koi in for 10-20 seconds, take him out and put him bak in the pond. Do twice a day 1 morn 1 evening, untill it looks cleared up

Keep us up to date on your water kit... how it came out.

Hi, I know when I had a problem one year with my koi I used a product called "melafix". The only prolem is it smells like vick vapor rub for a few days, the odor is strong but it did clear up the problem. I get catalogs from a company called Foster and Smith. They do have a website, you can google it and find info on pond products. Good luck
