can anyone tell me if this is a good guy or a bad guy????

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Ok I know this may seem silly but I am not educated in snakes and even though this was a lil one it is a snake none the less.
I know some are good and some are bad and I do not intend to get close enough to any of them to see their eyes (was once told the way the pupil is tells ya)
came across it when I was getting bamboo roots that we have dug up with a backhoe and thought I should start moving them so I can maybe hopefully praying get a veggie garden area ready for this year

Here's the belly view LOL had a lil copper orange stripe

Anyway to downsize your first photo? Most poisonous snakes have triangular heads, looks like they have large jowls. If you have any of the same problems with field mice, rats and gophers in the veggie garden as we do, you going to want to keep all the snakes you can.

Mibus,

Is this your snake: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leptotyphlops_humilis

I have actually dug one up before, being so proud that I had a nice big earthworm in my garden. When it slithered off, I just about wet my pants! I HATE snakes and I will most likely have a bad dream about them tonight (I always do after talking about them!).

ok resized it maybe that will help I did the best I could at getting a head shot

earthtiller it may be the eyes were like small dots and I agree with you I hate them.
I thought at first glance it was a worm and thought ....wow I have worms in my yard then the way it moved I knew it wasn't .snakes are not cold and slimly but none the less not popular in my book had a bad bad experience as a child.

I bet that is it, then! It sure looks like the one (refraining from typing the 's' word!) in your picture. Did you happen to see the post in the Garden Shed forum of the rattlesnake that got caught up in my automatic hose reel this fall? It was a horrible experience!

Haha, sorry about your dreams, Necia. I remember seeing one of those when I was kid in West Texas. I thought it was sooo cool. I guess everyone doesn't feel that way.lol

Mibus, I can't tell exactly what he is, but he's a good guy. Did you dig him up? It's awfully cold for snakes to be out. I'm more concerned with copperheads this time of year, they are impossible to see in a pile of leaves.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

No I didn't and thanks but will pass on going to look now as I might not sleep well myself...I knwo sounds silly but after the scorpion in my bed back in Sept I check my bed from time to time before getting in now and I sure don't' want to look for one of those LMAO

As for finding him I was pulling out some of the bamboo roots ....he wasn't very far from the top Dh dug up with the backhoe last weekend as I really want to get the spot cleared out so I can put in a veggie garden.......is going to take alot of work though *sigh* rented the backhoe for a day and I know he didn't get it all dug lose.
We're hoping to borrow a 4 wheeler from a guy my daughter works with and hook the disc up to it and try discing it up more

am thinking of posting in craig's list for free bamboo roots you dig and take
Just wish I had more time free instead of working 6 days a week to put into working on the area.

Not to inspire more dreams but no, it is not too cold. We had a warm spell earlier this month and I found a small brown (non poisonous) snake on the back porch. The cats had played with it till it succumbed. It was probably sluggish to start with. When the temp rises, they will come out and warm for the day.

For those that dislike snakes, clean up the leaves and pinestraw. Be careful when you pick it up as they will bed in it. That was one of the first dire snake warnings I ever received. The second, never put your hands or feet where you can't see. I rake leaves onto a tarp or large plastic and pick it up by the corners to move it. I do compost the leaves but don't play in the pile like we did as kids.

Mibus ~ look for a good Texas snake ID book. That helped me overcome my intense dislike for them. Once I knew which ones were wearing the "white hat" I felt better. The good ones do a good service to the community. LOL

Definitely one of the good guys. Eats termites and ants. We have them here in AZ also, and I find them in loose piles of earth, and sometimes after a heavy rain (whenever that might be). My cat is also a big fan of them. A mouth too tiny to eat anything other than ants and little tiny bugs, they are of no threat to anything larger than a termite.

I saw a show the other day and they were talking about snakes in the yard and garden and around fish ponds. They said that if you place Moth Balls around the area that it will deter the snakes because of the scent. Is this true? It was a bug and rodent exterminator that said to use them.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

thanks for the info I'll definitely will be getting a book. and I don't play in the compost either I just want to get this area of bamboo cleared out so I can put the compost in it and get ti ready for a garden...I want fresh veggies this year LOL

Hey! I'm bummed I missed you today! Where you already in town when you called?

As DH said, I was in Dallas all day.Where I ran into LouC! Small world, eh!

I've been collecting milk jugs all Summer for Winter sowing and just recently ran out of jugs and still have many seeds to sow. The reason I'm telling you this...On the way home from Dallas, I saw the strangest site. Milk jugs. Many, many milk jugs strewn all over the highway and median! They were clean so I threw all I could in the back of the car! LOL

Other than missing your visit, it was a near perfect day!

Dallas, TX

cocoa-lula, Now that is the best kind of recycling, dual recycling. Good find.I know all of your seed will sprout. Jerry

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Yeah tell me about it!!!!!!!!!!!!

funny though I thought about LouC too then thought on wait she is starting work so I bet she isn't home either. I took the day off so we could go get the 4x4's....monday is a slow day at the restaurant.
When I called we weren't quite to Canton yet..we had gone up 31 to 45 to get the 4x4's then came home on 20 thinking maybe we could stop by the shop so I tried calling the shoppe and no answer then tried the cell number I had but it was a guys voice on the voice mail so I hung up then tried the house since I grabbed my note from back in sept ...lol...that is when I called the house and talked to hubby.
too funny I am telling hubby to save the milk jugs like we did back in Illinois as I used them in the spring for early planting.

my only other option is trying on a weds but I have to be back here to drive again by 2:15 or on a sunday and I know that is my only day off so I hate to think of having you go to work just for me.

Thank you, Jerry. I'm hoping they all sprout, but need all the encouragement I can get.

Mibus, I think this was the last day of Market, so LouC should be back soon. I sure she could use a rest after that madhouse!
Still sad i missed you, but was worried you had driven all this way for nothing. If you ever come over on a Sunday, just call me, I live close to the shop...it's no problem. I'm probably going to be working weekends now until Valentines anyway.

All those milk jugs was too hysterical! I had been wishing for them...and there they were!!! Tonight I'm going to bed wishing for world peace and calorie free cupcakes! We'll see how that works out.lol

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

LOL you'll probably get the calorie free cupcakes first.

no need to worry about the trip if I drive over I would call first to make sure you were going to be around ...just like I called today so that if you were around we would have stopped by.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

bhaugh, someone called in to a radio gardening show the other day talking about the moth ball idea and the host said it would be very bad to put them out. I can't remember why, but she was very definite about it.

If it makes y'all feel any better, there are only 4 poisonous snakes in Texas: The Rattler (Rattlesnake), the Copperhead, the Cottonmouth (aka Water Moccasin) and the Coral Snake. If you just learn what those look like, the rest are good guys! :o)

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Cocoa ~ there is a wintersower out there somewhere that cried themselves to sleep last night... all those "spilt" milk jugs. LOL You go girl!
