Where could I purchase Corn Gluten Meal, and is it very expensive?
Corn Gluten Meal
I've gotten it from Peaceful Valley Farm Supply. I bought a 50-lb bag, since I had to pay shipping anyway I figured I might as well get the big one. I thought it was a little pricey, but it lasts a long time, and it WORKS. I mix it with cocoa hulls because when it starts to break down it's kinda smelly, and the cocoa hulls smell good!

I've bought it at the big box stores before.
Lowes, Walmart, Costco, Home Depot?
I think I saw it at Lowes and/or Home Depot last summer. Can't remember the price, but I didn't get it so I think I thought it was pricey... ?

I think it was lowes or Home Depot. $20
I'm sorry, but I don't know this one at all. What do you use it for? Fertilizer?
Thanks!
jill, according to researchers at Iowa State University, a one time application of corn gluten meal on your lawn - before weeds emerged -reduces the survival rates of dandelions, crabgrass, purslane and other weeds by an average of 60%. After several years, the corn gluten meal provides as much as 90% control. It's 10% nitrogen, so it feeds your grass as well!
Wow--sounds just like what I need around here! I might have to go on a quest!
Thanks, Lettuceman!
It definitely works as a pre-emergent---you have to be careful how you use it, though, because it REALLY WORKS! I put some seeds in the top layer of a pot several months after I though the corn gluten would have broken down, and the few seeds that did germinate in that layer were really slow.
I wonder if you could make your own corn gluten from your own corn? Gluten's the protien found in corn, yes? Just like gluten is the protien in wheat. I guess this would have to be a home experiment... Put corn in a blender and... ?
So, I just had to check the net - it's a by-product of making corn syrup and corn starch. This is the stuff, imported from China last year, in which they found melamine and cyanuric acid - a toxic combination - and sold in pet food as the protien.
Hope that problem has cleared up.
One company, Fertrell, sells "Weed Ban" for $43 / 50 lbs. Spread rate on lawns is 20 lbs. per 1,000 sq ft. So a 50 lb bag would cover 2,500 sq ft or 50 x 50 foot area. Worth it? I guess it depends on what kind of weed situation you are faced with...
Oh, and they evidently don't know exactly why it works, but the seeds never produce a secondary root.

It only worked on small seeds such as crab grass for me and I spread it heavily.
It is very light and a bag that normally holds 50 lbs, weighs only about 5 lbs.
Preen did not do better.
Lwas suggested corn gluten to rot a recently reclaimed sugercane field for vegetables. It will speed the decomposition and raise the organic matter in the soil.
