I am new to starting my plants from seeds. I have ordered tons of different kinds. I am going to start my tomatoes today. Is there a general rule of thumb for deciding when to start the others? I have ordered such a variety and I don't know if it is okay to start all of them today. I have flowering tobacco, lupine, stock, moon vine, laurentia, heliotrope, four o'clocks, angels trumpet, zinnias, cosmos, pentas and celosia. Thanks for some guidance. BTW, I am in Austin and last frost date is end of March (supposedly....)

when do I start indoor seeds for different plants
I am not familiar with all those but I found this neat list for Austin, I hope it helps.

Josephine.
Have you tried planting by the moon. Works for us. When we order from Park Seeds (or maybe it's Seeds of Change) we get a little booklet that gives guidelines for planting by the moon.
I start them in doors all by now... if they are hardy and not an annual I set them out in the fall and let Mother Nature do her thing with them and set out in spring. The annuals I start all in Dec with growing lights.
I've started most everything that I am going to grow now, in fact I just finished with my last batch indoors today. I've got things that need some cold treatment outside in winter sow containers and so far it is working great for cleome, cosmos, daylilies, gaillardia, and cowpen daisy. I need to go check and see if anything else is up. Got some more I want to get out there tomorrow. The only thing I haven't planted yet is zinnias, I was waiting a bit for them because they grow so fast. Last year they got pretty leggy before I could get them outside.
Blue eyes - I plant my zinnia in the spot I want them about Feb 14th and let them come up themselves when they are ready. If there is a really late frost I will have to cover them up but they do good and bloom great this way. I plant out a second batch some time around Spring break and a third batch just after the middle of April. Gives me a lot of plants and blooms.
Thanks Mitch...I think I'll try that. Easier than transplanting them over and over.
right - with everything I transplant already what I can do in the ground I do!
