Aliums and other fall planted bulbs

McLean, VA(Zone 6b)

Is it too late to plant fall bulbs and get flowers this year? I know that I can't get them into the ground because it is too cold, but could I pot them up, and then transplant them in the spring to the garden? I just found some aliums on sale that I would be interested in if I can get them to flower. I've never planted aliums before, so I'm not sure if I would have any leeway timewise.

What kind of alliums are you thinking about planting. And are they still firm ? Patti

They are alium giganteum. I don't know if they are firm since I haven't purchased them yet.

I think you can force them and then plant them after they have finished blooming in the ground in the spring. I have transplanted forced Narcissus from a pot as they were about to bloom into the workable spring ground and they still bloomed in their new spot and have continued to thrive. If the bulbs arrive desiccated then that would be bad. Patti I just found this site http://icangarden.ca/forum.cfm?chatthreadid=5191&task=viewthread

I still have some Allium "Firmament" on my kitchen counter.

Do you think I can plant them, or should I put them in the soup?!
