Can anyone tell me the name of the plant that you get poppy seeds from? I know it's called a poppy too, but not listed that way in any seed books I can find, and doesn't look like a 'poppy'.
I tried to grow some one year, but had absolutely no success, so would like to try again, if I can find them.
TIA,

Poppy problem
Hi Marilyn,
Do you mean the poppy seeds used in cooking? If so, that's the Opium Poppy (Papaver somniferum). We have them a lovely pink double variety at the Museum and the flowers almost look like a double peony.

You may want to try Richters. They are in Ontario & specialize in herbs and such. I think I've seen poppy seeds in their catalog (online & print) for cooking. www.richters.com
I just took a peek and Dominion has them too: http://www.dominion-seed-house.com/en-CA/ProductList.aspx?Crit=papaver+somniferum&PL=1
So does Vesey's http://www.veseys.com/ca/en/store/annuals/poppy/blackpeonypoppy so they should be easy to find, if that's the ones you are referring to.

Hi Folks:
Thanks for the information.
I was looking for an entirely fictional plant, I think, based on some really unclear photography in a catalogue. (See photo in T&T catalogue)
What the plant looked like in the photo, was a huge seed head sitting right on the ground .
Just the angle of the phot, I guess.
So, maybe my poppies actually grew, and I pulled them out, not knowing what they were *sigh*
Thanks again,
~m
