Snow in the Carolinas

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

wow is anyone else getting this snow...I feel like some Capt Morgans and Eggnog right about now looking out at this Christmas like night......

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Haven't seen snow in real life for 10 years at least and the last time I did I was standing on top of a mountain in Nevada. It was a nasty cold day and boy do I hate heat pumps when it gets like this.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

Oh I hear you! I had one when I lived in IN and I swear the colder it got outside the colder the air from the ducts was! You're going to the the App. RU right? Your name looks familiar... :)~

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

rednyr, no way, I was in love with pirates before Johnny Depp made them hot.. and I thought I was the only one...lol

no snow, I keep looking out like a little kid. I had to go turn up the heat in the GH though. I feel like I won't be able to sleep tonight, there was ice on the walls this AM

10 years! It sonwed here last year but was gone in a few hours. I guess it's been maybe 4 years since the last sled-worthy snow

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

oh trop I can see we are going to have to get together the nite before the App RU and discuss pirates LOL

I just went out to check the GH and boy am I glad I did...it was 45 out there so I plugged up the other newer heater and brought in my Gerbera Daisy that is almost about to bloom again...I hope the rest of the crowd makes it out there tonite..guess it's a good thing I brought in those seed trays earlier after all...

It is sleeting here now...my slippers are full of wet cold snow/ice..yuck...

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

ok, maybe I'm being overparanoid, mine was like 57 or so. It's dark so I was trying to see the thermometer with a candle...lol. How big's your GH? I have a hobby 8x8...still a lot when the heat bill comes

not only do I fully appreciate Cap'n Morgan, actually I grew up on the coast near where they think they found Blackbeard's ship...but hey, can't hate Johnny Depp for sweetening the deal..lol

In case your wondering where I am. In 17 years here I saw snow flakes once at something like 5 AM.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

no you are not being paronoid...had I not gone out and checked the GH temp I would have lost many plants...

My GH is about 10x10... one side is slanted w/ plexi...I was trying to find a pic to upload but can't seem to locate it in the mess I call my pics...I'll try again tomorrow after I've had some sleep LOL. and you are right...when the electric bill comes I know it...but then again I hang my laundry out everyday of the year it doesn't rain or I am sick to make up for it so I don't wanna hear it from the other half LOL

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

We got snow! I'll have pictures later after the daughter & I go play. Maybe an inch or so, mixed with ice, but it was a really nice surprise

glad I turned the heat up, it felt awesome in the GH this morning!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Core, I saw snowflakes in downtown Beaufort (SC) in 2000. They lasted for at least 17 seconds then changed back to drizzly rain.

It has been raining hard here steadily since about 5 yesterday afternoon. My rain gauge is not set up at the moment but I am sure we have had and inch or two minimum. Wunderground says 1/3" to 1/2" max, go figure. We are drenched, if this stuff was frozen it would be called a blizzard.

As to heat pumps, I wish Blackbeard's revenge on whoever invented them.

Franklin, NC(Zone 6b)

I never want to see another heat pump as long as I live....One was enough for me. I now have gas heat thank the Lord

rednyr-I can't believe you still hang your laundry out.....so do I and I love doing it. My Mom and I are the only two left in our community who does it. I simply will not even wash my sheets unless I know they will go out on that line to dry.

Shirley

Hayesville, NC(Zone 7a)

Hi, mrsspeedsgarden!! I'm excited to find you, in
Franklin, in zone 6b!! I am in Hayesville, zone 7a.
I have been enjoying the mid-south forum, though so
many of them are in warmer places. When I inspected
this forum, I thought the folks in it were all on the beach.

I think my computer is fixing to crash, so my visit here
may be short! But I will look in on you 'uns while I can.

I love a clothesline, too. Don't have one because my DH
didn't, but he died almost 5 years ago. Time to put one up.

Fitsy

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Cold outside still, mainly slush now but here's some pics

we're in the Piedmont Triad, actually, about 20 mins from Winston-Salem, but I used to work in Franklin. The old man and I went to WCU, ....so I bet you guys actually got some accumulation??

oops! I didn't mean to be rude! I love beach folks, too;
my brother is a beach person (Emerald Isle). But we can't
talk garden much.
Its quite warm. Not much accumulation in Hayesville,
38 miles west of Franklin.
Fitsy

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

Fitsy you weren't being rude silly goose...and I am sorry to hear about your DH passing...

Shirley - hanging clothes on the line seems to be a lost art LOL but I totally agree with you sheets are so much better hung outside! about the only thing I'll 'touch up' in the dryer are jeans if they get to be like cardboard stiffs...

Trop glad you turned up the heat and had some fun in the snow with your daughter! I was tempted to wake the kids up last nite just to go play in it...but I just played with the cats instead...my kids are like me...kinda grumpy when they first get up and then better after a shower...LOL

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

Hello to the Carolinas from Maine!
Wow- I can't believe you have snow too. Just caught your post and had to see. We have had outrageous snow so far year. Nearly 60 inches so far. More is sure to come. Ours just started to melt and we got 15 inches on Monday. More tomorrow. Hope it doesn't damage your gardens. Mine are used to it. I can't even see it, as a matter of fact. LOL Cyndie

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

Cyndie...are you near Wayne ME at all? My brother lives there with his family and he's been having a blast with the snow and his ski doo...ok snow mobiles...he hates it when I say ski doo.....LOL

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, We are actually! We are on Wilson Pond which is mostly in Wayne! LOL Small world. When I go down the hill into the lake I am in Wayne. ;) Yeah, I know this is snow mobile heaven.... but I personally prefer the lake when it is liquid. lol
We are very lucky here, we are sorta off the "beaten track" and a busy day is in the winter with the snowmobilers going down the lake. More noise in winter than summer. Nice to hear from you. Cyndie

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Fitsy, you weren't rude at all, hope I wasn't either..lol

cyndie, you are in the cruel arctic up there..I can't imagine. My hands were freezing after an hour in the stuff

rednyr, did your kids have school today?I need to check the delays now to see if she's out...I'm already OD-ing on hot chocolate...lol

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

You know a funny thing is I'll be bring the kids to this little event on Hilton Head that they make snow at. LOL. They make snow and the kids run around making snow balls. They get real excited about it. lol.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Can't believe it did sleet and snowed last night, but turned to rain within an hour!
Had a bad ice-storm one year since I moved here..but no snow.
Like Fitsy, MidSouth forum's where I've been warming myself....but looks like some there are getting unexpected white flakes too!
C'mon spring...

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

That's kind of nice for the kids to be able to play in fake snow.

we weren't able to really make good snowballs, just loosely packed cause there was so much ice mixed in

heavenscape I can't believe you actually got some winter your way. I'd probably get into trouble on your end of the state cause I wouldn't bother mulching...lol

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

Trop - it was acutally quite funny , one had a delay and one didn't - one goes to public school which had a delay and the other private which didn't have a delay I suppose because all the parents drive the kids so the private school doesn't have to worry about liability like the public schools with transit...I kept them both home 2 hrs anyway since it was Camerons 15th B'day today so we could all be lazy...

Heavenscape, I hear ya! I just want mother nature to be sure she gets all the cold outta her system before she brings on spring...last year was horrid with the late freeze and like everyone else things either got burned from frost and didn't make it or it set them back quite a bit...

Core- when do they do that at Hilton Head...sounds like a blast!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Next weekend at the park at shelter cove. They do a lot of community events there especial once we get into the spring then they're once a week. Wine fest is a good one to come to. Largest wine tasting on the East coast or so they say. Food fest, chilli cook off, wing fest, etc.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Trop, as you know I have hedys, stromanthes, curcumas and galangals that had to be mulched!!!!!!!! In fact, we mulched at least 6inches! Phobia from that last heavy late frost we had?
Rednyr, I had just been warned by the local brugmansia grower to not plant anything outside till after April 15th! Gonna be a taxin' time! Lolol!

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

oh heaven...no pun intended I'm sure...BTW do you cut your brugs down or wait until spring?

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Cut the ones outside down. But I have some cuttings gowing in the GH.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

ok thats what I did last year and then someone here locally told me to leave them standing until spring so I thought I'd ask...Thank you!

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

I only have one that's still kinda new but I cut it back because the neighbors do and it gets really big every year. No blooms yet, it had just gotten big enough to fork before it got cold

just like my hedy blooms...lol. My curcumas better make it, they had a great show this summer. hope I mulched enough now that I see how the snow packed the leaves down

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Hmm...that means the plants will try to put out unnecessary energy!
I've been spoiled by this grower, but this year, I try doing it on my own, thanks to DG, a new obsession!
Trop, I truly wish I could go to the App. RU!
Enjoyed myself on your space, Rednyr. Have to leave early in the morning!
Goodnight and y'all keep warm!
~Jaye

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Jaye, it's always a pleasure, of course we'd love to see you in Asheville, but maybe someone will put together a RU closer to the coast

now I have seen someone in the neighborhood not cut down their brugs too. I think the'rs get taller than my neighbors but IMO the neighbor's looks healthier and fuller, not lanky. I'm undecided how I feel about them so far because I haven't had it bloom yet and the things just seem like total water hogs...took cuttings and they're rooting easily, so I guess that's a plus

Franklin, NC(Zone 6b)

Hi Fitsy-I have been to Hayesville, NC many many times...even camped over there some. Yes we are definetely neighbors. Hope you can come to our RU and meet everyone. Last year was my first time attending one and I loved it. DH asked me what in the world I wanted with more plants but he went with me in the end and enjoyed it as much as I did.

Kara-The snow was very skimpy here, only 2-3 inches and became mushy really quick..We have not had a good snow here since the blizzard of 1993. Now that was a snow, we got 24 inches and was snowed in for over a week.

Deanna-Yes I do have to soften up the jeans in the dryer. I don't think we could get them on if we didn't. LOL

Shirley

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

we didn' t get to play long, it did get slushy fast. That is one thing I miss about living in WNC, we're lucky if we get an inch of snow at a time per year. At least up there there's usually one good sled (or tube)-worthy snow a winter :)
