What to plant in a wheelbarrow

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi, I have an old old wheelbarrow, rusted with no legs. I would like to use it for flowers this year. What would you advise.
I would like to havae something that hangs over the side maybe and something in the middle, maybe 2 or 3 things
Anyway, really need help
I also have an old bathtub with legs I wanted to use, but it only has one drain so I guess that's out

You could make more drain holes....

I suggest Purple Heart for the wheelbarrow to hang over the sides, mixed with white lobelia.

Here's a thought for your bathtub.

How about mounding the soil in the center of the wheelbarrow and then planting a package of petunia seeds or buying a six cell pack of them? They'd hang over the edge and look lovely.

I love the ideas. What do you have growing behind the bathtub, Pirl.

Also Dutchlady, I haven't heard of the plants you mentioned, do they have another name?

I looked them up, beautiful. Do you have any to trade. I may not have anything you want, but if not, maybe Ican go to seed trading and check it out.

Anyway, thanks.

Thanks but it's not my bathtub. I took the photo at a very artsy nursery in the next town.

I just bought one package of Dahlia seeds, Unwin strain. They get to 2' tall and the package cost all of $1.69. It has 83 seeds in it. You could plant the seeds directly and have plants at about 2 cents each and the wheelbarrow would be overflowing.

Do you know a good mail order seed company.? I want to order the dalias and some other stuff, but I've bought too many seeds around here that are not very good!!!
I've been able to get lots of things from trading, but there are a few things I need to buy. I went to the Park Seed site and couldn't deal
with $3.50 seed packs. I would cry every time I looked at the flowers

I know Thompson & Morgan have their own site that offers sale priced seeds but I just tried to find it and couldn't. Maybe you could find out more at the winter sowing forum.

Value Seeds is the name. I believe all packets of seeds are 99 cents.

Are they pretty good seeds? I know my daughter in law found some for 25 cents at the dollar store. She just put a whole package into a pot and figured at least some of them would come up and she got quite a lot out of them Guess she figured for 25cent, if she j ust got a few out of it.
Okay, so I'm going to Value seeds.
In the wheel barrel Pirt, shouldn't I put some taller in the middle.

I don't even know what seeds they have available. Something taller in the middle would be nice and something that drapes over the sides would be nice.

I didn't see any dahlias at all but there are some zinnias and yarrow along with alyssum in the gold family.

You could also plant a few herbs in there like basil.

You could make this very fun. Do a mix of herbs, bell pepper, marigolds, bacopa to trail, strawberries, nasturgins dwarf type, bell peppers, pansy, and for the center something taller like some types of salvia to draw the humming birds there too, or foxgloves, cosmos. Have fun.

The comments were for the bath tub.

I always buy from Value seeds. It's Thompson & Morgan's leftovers. They don't have pretty pictures on the packages, so print out or copy to your journal what you end up buying - I always have to go back and check when the seeds arrive. But if you like what they have it's a great value! xx, Carrie

Ok, now I'm going to have to go find more old wheelbarrows!! lol
I love all the ideas.
Everyone talks about the sweet potato vines. Where do you get them? The only one I've ever seen growing was one my mom had on the coffee table and she just took a sweet potato and put it in water, but I notice you all have names for all of them`

Your local nurseries probably already have them. Check Plant Files and you'll probably love what you see.

But Lorraine, you can just do what your Mom did! I always thought SPV (Sweet Potato Vine) was different from sweet potatoes like the ones you eat. They are different because they've been bred to be different, but you can eat the "ornamental" ones, too. Up here, they don't I guess have time (?) to develop big potatoes or tubers, but I have heard of people digging them up (tubers from their "ornamental SPV) and saving them and planting them the next spring.

Which reminds me, I got some trades of delosperma (ice plant) from someone in Texas, and they just TOOK OFF in my containers, even here in New England. I'll bet that would be an idea too, and no work, in your climate.

I once made a deep plastic wheel barrow into a water garden. I had seen it in a garden somewhere and thought it was a great idea. I put mine in a grassy area though and the grass grew up around it so bad but I couldn't move it to mow because the tire was always flat...... I'm thinking about doing it again if I can find a better spot. I even had a couple of goldfish in it that did fine.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I've thought about that so many times. I want a little water thing. My daughter in law has one that my son made for her. He just dug up, pul that black lining in it. She put really pretty rocks, all different sizes, then they put the pump in. She put some goldfish.

Only thing for me is I have grandkids living right in front of me who would want to fish and can you even imagine what they would throw in there.

She has 2, One larger one in the back of her house, so all of the kids "fish" and throw things in it and leaves her nice one alone.

I do love the idea of the wheelbarrow tho. It's rusted really bad cause it's so old, I'd line it with something I guess.
