I am looking for a nursery that sells Justicia Carnea - Brazilian Plume Flowers.
Preferably in Southern Florida.
Any ideas?
These are beautiful 4 ft perenials with plumes of lovely flowers in pink, white or yellow. They enjoy shade and are drought resistant. I've seen them growing wild in Trinidad in the mountains and was pleased to see t hem listed in "Florida Top 10 Garden Guide". Unfortunately I am having a difficult time finding them in the FT Myers area.
Barzilian Plume Flowers
Top Tropicals in Punta Gorda lists them. If you go, use their directions from Ft. Myers...lots of folks get lost using Mapquest, Google etc.
OldNed,
Thanks for the tip. I'll give them a call and let you know how I make out.
They are fairly common in the southeast; I am surprised you cannot find them in FL. I wonder if the nurseries don't have them because they are not blooming right now. Many people around here still refer to them by their old name Jacobinia. You might try asking for that one.
If you can't find them locally, Logee's in CT carries them.
I just picked up one at the Rawlings Conservatory in Md. Not that you would get one there, but do you have any Conservatories in your area that sell a few plants?
Returned from a couple of weeks travel and have secured the Brazilian Plume Flowers in Pink, White and a yellow variety from Top Tropicals. (HURRAY!) I've been very impressed with the information on their site.
We should be planting in the next few weeks.
HAWAIIAN BELL is a vine I'm interested in trying on a trellis covering the bottom floor of our home across from a marina. The area is a mix of sun and shade with occasional strong winds.
Anyone have experience with Ipomoea Beraviensis, also referred to as Stictocardia Beraviensis?
My Lowes here in St. Pete carries them in the spring.
My FIL works at a Home Depot in Newport Richey, Fl. and when we were down there I was amazed at the things they had for sale. Much cheaper and larger than anything I find up north. We had gone to a botanical garden at the U of South Florida in Tampa for the day and I came back to his house with an African Mask Allocasia all excited. I had wanted one for quite a long time. He said you should have come over to the store they had them twice as big for $2 less. The next morning I was over at the store going thru their plants. LOL
The Brazilian Plume I picked up at the Conservatory in Baltimore really looks good. Shortly after I got it home I found some kind of pest on it but I cleaned them off and have been watching it very closely. I guess the real test will be to see if it will bloom for me again.
